I’ve built one before, it wasn’t an easy task, but it came out pretty good once I was done. I painted it in the Free Kuwaiti version.
But this one I intend to build in the Yugoslavian version.
If anyone can help, I am looking for the color it was painted in, or the closest FS number, since The eastern bloc nations didn’t use the FS at that time, That I know of.
I’m just wondering what the color was, or at least the closest to the FS color. I really can’t tell in the pics I have.
Hey Filzy, I wish I could be more specific here, but I’ve got several color pics of the T-84 (not “M”) from Jane’s Tank and Combat Vehicles Recognition Guide that shows it in a light tan with what looks like a light olive or field drab splotches and black slashes in what I can only describe as a 3-color MERDC scheme from the 80’s; the other photo shows it in the same light tan with olive green splotches…
The book is available at either Borders or Barnes and Noble bookstore; it’s a small, thick soft-cover book about the size of a brick. You might want to look it up. The isbn # on the two I have are: 0-00-712959-6 and 0-00-472452-6 These are great little books, lotsa recent color photos, and great if you’re into current armor.
Sorry, I can’t help with the color scheme, but Filzy is refering to the M-84, the Yugoslavian version of the T-72M1, and the doog is refering to the T-84, the Ukrainian version of the T-80U… T-72 vs T-80… I think there are a lot of differences between those tanks… Most regards.
Hey, where’d you manage to score one of those? I got a Kirin T-72 Lion of babylon, which is basically a reboxed DML offering, but I know that their M-84 kit comes with a resin turret, correct (vaguely) for that version.
Wish I could help you with colours. I have a few pics, but honestly, they show great, great variation. And about half of the pics I have exhibit quite a bit of grainy texture, greatly lightening the base colour. From what I’ve seen in real life, they used a tone slightly lighter than standard Russian green, although I haven’t seen one in more than 10 years though.
Wow, this is alot harder than I thought. I may use a medium green or an olive green of sorts.
I’m sue I’ll figure it out in time, but thank you though. I appreciated it.
As for how I got it, I scored it off of Ebay. Every so often they pop up, so I snagged one. I am building or intend to build a whole series of the T-72 from that era, before the Soviet Union collapsed. I have found some conversion stuff, and some turrets from AEF designs, as well as Verlinden.
I should get some pics up of the M-84 when I get it and build it.
I saw a few of those things when I was in the Balkans during 2005. All were a VERY faded overall green. The closest colors I could recommend would be polly scale Warsaw Pact Armor green (very close to SAC bomber green) over some darker green that could no longer be accurately discerned. Something in the area of 34079, RLM 71, or testors Soviet Armor green might be a good start point. I dont know how big the JNA (Yugoslav National Army) was on keeping their tanks freshly painted or if their factory paint job stayed on them for life.
The turret is semi done, I’m concentrating on the Hull right now. I must have build the DML/Dragon/Kirin kits many times, I don’t need the intsructions anymore. The tracks are gonna take ALOT of time being individual Track pieces.
Thanks to Stikpusher, as well as a color cross reference guide, I will be able to Get a pretty decent idea on what colors to use. I’ll keep everyone posted on the progress.
