Anyone know of a kit for this or a place for plans? I’ve googled it but only get partial pics, no detail shots of it.
I remember a guy doing one a long long time ago in one of the magazines (pre FSM I think). I may have it stashed in the bone pile.

awesome, thanks for the link.
There was an article with drawings and pix in FSM probably 7-8 years ago. It was built
for the Monogram 1/48th Kingfisher.

I stumbled onto some plans for a 1:48 scale p-6 Catapult. The Lone Star kit is just a little too rich for me, but super nice. Maybe someday. Plans are from a site called www.floatingdrydock.com
I looked up the article from FSM, it was in an '87 issue but is only available in print. Maybe I’ll order a copy.
I got a set of the blueprints from Floatingdrydock a few years back. They are nice, but have no detailed info on the mechanics.
My build sits in a box, unfinished, until I can find a good source for the internal workings, or if I can ever take a trip to see the North Carolina BB-55.

I saw the Lonestar models version at the IPMS Show last weekend. It’s a beautiful piece of work but it’s fairly expensive. Well above $100 but I don’t recall the exact amount the vendor was asking.
somewhere in my files of photgraphs I have several of the catapults on the North Carolina. I’ll have to try and find them (I’ve have over 10K photos). Just from memory the resin cast one didn’t seem like the one I saw on the battleship, but that’s been about 12 years since I last saw it.

I’ve got that issue! I bought it while looking for reference material. I was rather disappointed when I got the issue, tho. The plans are based only on the length of the catapult and some photos. While the structure looks “right” the details are a bit off. I’d love to scan and post it, but I don’t have access to a scanner. I could take some digital pics and post them if you like.
I found the rest of my reference material over the weekend. It included some Xeroxed pics of the catapult from the North Carolina that were sent to me by the museum. They are good, but don’t include interior mechanical details either.
I used Squadron’s “OS2U Kingfisher In Action” for some good photos. I contacted the author, Al Adcock, and asked about catapults, but he told me that he didn’t research the catapults while working on his book, so he couldn’t help me. He told me to try The Floating Drydock.
I bought the CAT-1 and CAT-2 plans from The Floating Drydock. At the time they didn’t have the EP-1 Battleship Catapult Pamphlet. Does anyone have a copy of that? I’d be interested to know what’s included.
Gary, if you could find those pics, I’d love to see 'em!

cardshark_14 was nice enough to scan me a copy of the article and I enlarged the drawings from them to see how they look. Once I get the Cat 1 plans in from Floating Drydock I’ll compare and see where it goes. I probably don’t have the skill to do an exact replica, I just want to get close. I wonder how it would be doing the structure in balsa instead of styrene?
Go to the Evergreen plastic and Plas-struct (maybe “Plasti-struct”?) web sites. They make sheet plastic and also various shapes of plastic, such as “I” beams, "T"s, “C” channels, “L” shaped in various sizes, and various sizes of round (tubes) and other shapes. There are other suppliers that supply shaped plastic for the Architechural model builders as well. You should be able to find the shapes you need for the catapult, which is mostly “C”, “I”, and “L” shaped channel. The pulley you may be able to find in the model rail road or model ship parts suppliers stock. This sounds like a good project. There is a 1/72nd scale kit of a Japanese float plane that includes the catapult. Hasagawa made it, if I recall correctly. The Japanese often copied other nations stuff, so this kit could be a good referrence for your project, but keep in mind I know zip about boats and boat paraphenalia.
Cool, thanks. I googled them, it’s just Plastruct. They have a catalog but I just printed off a couple pages with some items I can use. They make a lot of stuff in plastic. I’ll search out that kit. I wonder if is out there in 1/48?
Have you visited this website?

It’s got a nice drawing of the P-6, but it doesn’t enlarge very well. The site also talks about that Hasegawa model near the bottom of the page. I have that model too, and the catapult resembles the P-6.
Here it is, and soon to be rereleased!

I used mostly Evergreen plastic for my P-6. Mostly because Evergreen was easier for me to get than Plastruct. The catapult wasn’t that hard to do. I bought a BUNCH of grant line bolts to detail the surface. I got to the point where the catapult was better looking than my Kingfisher, so I bought a second Kingfisher to superdetail. [D)] I’ll try to dig my catapult out and take some pics tonight.

I’d love to see your photos.
Regards,
Ok, I was able to get the material from the North Carolian scanned at work! I’ve uploaded them to photobucket.

I also took a pic of my model. I’ve moved twice since I stopped work on my project, so I haven’t been able to locate all the pieces.
I found the main structure in the box with my Titanic… kinda where I feel this project has been for the past, oooooh 10 years: Sunk! [:-^]

watchman,
Dont make the trip to Wilmington to see the North Carolina’s catapults just yet . She no longer has them on board. They were removed when she was in the “mothball” fleet in the '50s or early '60s. She is still awsome to tour, but dont go camera in hand for shots of the catapults.

Thanks for the info! I would have been rather upset… to say the least. ![]()
And, perhaps that explains why most of the pictures I posted either have USS Alabama or Naval Aircraft Factory, Philadelphia, PA on them?

Great pics. I got the Floating Drydock plans today and they’re awesome. Came printed on a large sheet drawn in 1/48. Watchman, what did you do to get the rivets on your’s? I’m wondering if pastruct has thin strips with them in like?
Oh, it was really easy. I used Round Head rivets for the outside detail, and bolts for the inside. After I had the wall cut out, I just predrilled holes where I wanted the rivets. The rivets and bolts come on the the parts tree so it looks like a comb with the rivets/bolts being at the end of the teeth. I cut them off the tree leaving a bit of the teeth, slipped them through the holes and applied a little liquid cement. Some hacking and sanding on the back side when it’s dry and you’re done!
You can see a strip of plastic with bolts in the pictures. I made them the same way. I am going to cut it up and apply this to the insides to represent the other half of the bolt and bracing.
Please post some pictures of your progress! I’m axious to see it. ![]()
