Does anyone know where to find examples of paint schemes for the early Porsche King Tiger? I’ve seen a few websites, and most of them have the tiger striped pattern. I was hoping to find one representing a dotted, ambush paint scheme. Thanks in advance for your knowledge and expertise. [:)]
Yeah, I’m with you on this one. However, like Erik said, I haven’t seen the Porsche version in ambush. I’ll bet Jon (Captain Caveman) can totally clarify this for us. He’s a wizard on the K.T. [:)]
Here is the official version.
On 19 August 1944 OKH Wa J Rue ( Wug 6 ) VIII Issued orders to assembly firms : Effective immediately, all armored vehicles are to recieve a a coat of camouflage paint at the assembly plant. In addition to a base coat of Dunkelgelb ( RAL 7028 ), the colors Olivgruen ( RAL 6003 ) and Rotbraun ( RAL 8017 ) must be applied in patches. This concern is of decisive significance for the troops. Every effort must be made to complete part of the august production with this new camouflage patern.
This wa the order that initiated what has become known as the “ambush” pattern. It is important to notice that it doesn’t mention the dots, so the ambush pattern is really just a 3 tone factory applied paint scheme. The dots was introduced later but not as a part of an direct order.
The last of the so-called “Porsche” turret Kingitgers was produced in June 1944, and this order was issued in August 1944, so no “Porsche” turret’s had the ambush scheme. They did have a 3 tone paint scheme, but that was field applied over a factory applied Dunkelgelb base coat.
God I love this hobby. Where else can you find people with the knowledge and willingness to help you out. You guys rule. I’ll post pics when I’m eventually finished with this, my last 1/16 scale R/C tank. I’ve built Tamiya’s Tiger I, Sherman, Bandai’s Stug IV and now the Tamiya King Tiger with the Porsche style turret.
