Here is my latest, Tamiya’s old King Tiger Porsche. I built it OOB and slapped together a base for it. I guess it took me about a month or 5 weeks, mostly working 1 or 2 days a week on the weekends. Trees are sticks glued together, ground work is mostly natural except for the tall grass, which is Woodland Scenics.
The suspension was a pain, and an afterthought so that it would sit well on the uneven terrain, but I think it looks OK.
Thanks to Bodge for the technique on chipping, very convincing! It’s subtle around the hatches but it’s there. Also I tried the dot filter method on the fenders. I think it is too subtle, but since it’s an easy enough technique I’ll probably do it again.
I kept the weathering to a minimum and used oil washes under a nice coat of powdered pigments. In person it gave me just the effect I was looking for.
Please enjoy, and all comments, questions and criticism are welcome!
Anthony- Ahh, the zimm. I hate the Germans for this stuff [;)]. On the turret I started by using 2-part Bondo and a razor saw. It dried too fast so I peeled it off and started over. Next I tried Miliput on the turret sides. It still did not end up perfect, but I didn’t want to risk damage to the kit so I left it on there. For the rest of the tank (front and rear turret, mantlet, all of the hull) I used one part Bondo Spot and Glazing putty, texture with a razor saw. I guess it looks OK, but in some spots it is too shallow.
Dupes- I noticed the tracks too, and that is the one part where I am kinda stumped. I adjusted the suspension as best I could considering it is not designed to be movable. I tried adding groundwork like the rocks, and I’ve considered throwing some sticks “branches” under there, but I’m not too sure what will look good. Got any suggestions?
Congrats on the award. I really like the groundwork, looks like, well, ground. As far as sucking this thing down to the ground, is is actaully secured to the base? A long drywall screw through the hull bottom to the base may help conform the tracks to the irregularities you already have on the base.
That’s a good idea about screwing it down, I think I will try that. It’ll probably make things more secure all around as well. I have adjusted it a little since these pictures were taken, so it does look a little better. I may try the screw and also add some debris under the tracks to fill in a little. I’ll post some new pics in a couple of weeks when I get the model back. It’s on display at the LHS right now.
