I’m going to try my hand at painting this model and since I’m new to the hobby I thought I’d ask for some advice. I have brushes and an airbrush and was thinking of applying a base coat 1st and then matt finish clear spray and then applying more paint , next maybe a mix or a wash (not sure how to apply a wash) to make the model look realistic. Any advice is appreciated. This is my 1st time so maybe I should keep it simple.
Is this the styrene Aurora/Polar Lights kit, a resin garage kit, a vinyl kit, or possibly the Bandai styrene kit?

I think your plan sounds good, except I would use do the clear spray when you are done with all the regular painting and drybrushing, and just before the wash. In my experience, the wash will go on better over a gloss coat, but you can seal the wash with a flat coat and the end result will be the same. Applying a wash is pretty easy - the principle is just water down a dark brownish/black mixture, brush liberally,and then wipe off gently. Repeat a couple of times… You can find many websites that give more details about different types of wash (oil is my favorite) but the principle is the same… just be sure to seal the paint job before you do the wash, or you might just WASH that away!

I painted that kit and the Bandai kit the same way: rattlecan Testors Gold, drybrushed with lightened Testors gold enamel, washed with thinned flat black acrylic, then finished with Testors Dulcote in the rattlecan (this was about 12 years ago, pre-airbrush!). The drybrushing and wash really accentuate all those scales!
I’ve always wondered why Aurora skipped the scales on the backs of the necks…lazy dogs! Bandai gives you every single scale!
