After browsing many photos of these machines, it seems fairly common to see see items such as water cans, etc. hanging over the upper sloped side armor plates of the troop compartment. Were there some sort of tie down points along the upper inner side?
There was a handrail that ran along the inside, just inside the upper edge. It went most of the distance from the front to the back. Most of the cans, helmets, etc that you’ve seen hanging on the outside of the vehicle were actually strapped to this rail.
Thanks for the info! Now that I know what to look for, I saw the rails in a few pics. Of course my ancient Tamiya 251/1C does not have those so I will need to scratchbuild some…
