Guys, saw this in Dragon Models USA newsletter this morning. I haven’t bought one of those ‘Orange Boxes’ from Cyber-Hobby Models but maybe I will this time if I find this at my LHS. Don’t have a Panther Ausf A yet…
I recall you telling us that those are re-boxed kits along with extra PEs and accessories. This kit comes LOADED this time… aluminum barrel without a seam, lots of PEs, and even figures too. How bad those re-boxed kits can be?
Those “orange” box kits are actually not half bad (I built the JS-II that came with Magic Tracks). Their MSRP is usually around $30 or so, but I find them at shows selling for half that. Sure their an older kit(that still retains whatever flaws it originally had) but the extras usually make it more then worth your while. Especially when you get them for $15 or so at shows.[;)]
Thanks MG! Is there a way I can find out what kind of kit that was reboxed? Will it say something on the box itself so I will know it is not a very old kit.
I don’t think this one’s truly an “orange box” kit but more like a special-CH release that you may only see released in Asia under their label judging by the pic there of the box. The level of features/treatment that it has isn’t the “normal” level for an orange-box which is typically combined with an older Imperial Series kit or early-days 6000 series kit and more-modern upgrades like Magic tracks or figures thrown in as a bargain. DragonUSA may be offering it but it’s not likely to be distributed widely if at all within the US outside of DragonUSA itself. This one actually has Panther G Smart Kit features present in it which is why I think it’s not a straight orange-box type of kit.

I consider myself a collector of kits now… I have been trying to buy good kit for each class if possible. wBill has been a bad influence… I buy whatever he builds and I think my wife doesn’t like him now. Hope I have your blessing on this? [:$] I think I have pushed myself this time because I have signed up for four GBs… [bnghead] But it is a good thing two of GBS last a full year.
Welcome to the true “dark side” of armor modeling Andy! My stash stands at 78 kits (and that’s a pretty meager one depending on how you gauge it) so you can always tell your wife it could be worse! [;)] The Panther looks like an excellent item to add to your stash, go in peace my son! [Y]
LOL Bill, your “small” stash of 78 dwarfs my 33. The plus for you is that you whip out your builds. I wish I was productive as you. There are too many cool subjects out there.
I hear you on that point Eric, definitely a case of too many attractive subjects and so little time! [:D] At one point my stash was over 100 kits and I had to establish a rule that was a zero-sum approach. I refused to buy any more kits than I was finishing in a given time period…so that helped keep me motivated in my production quota so to speak. Still at roughly 10 finished build a year tops, I’ve still got a nearly 8 year supply if I didn’t buy anything new and just worked on what’s in the stash. My new kit acquisition levels have dropped severely though in recent years due to the simple fact that I’ve got just about all the vehicles I’m interested in covered or have already built them so don’t have the interest to revisit them whenever the new kit of that subject comes out. I’ve flatlined a bit in that respect I guess. [:D]
