KC-97 BoomTanker Done

This is the academy 1/72 kit its been in the works for close to a year because of fit issues, one of those build a little and through it back on the shelf if ya know what i mean. Paint used Testors chrome spray paint de canted and insgnia red all enamels. I built it with the boom down and the refueiling nozzle extended i intend to build another1/72 bird flying in behind it to refuel but havent figured out what. If you have any ideas let me know

thanks Rob

Nice build. I think having it refueling the 1/72 Hasegawa B-47 would look impressive.

Love those tankers!! I am currently working on a 1/200 KC-10 Extender, and a 1/72 KC-135. I’ve gone all out on the KC-135 - resin wheels, resin galley set, PE cockpit, custom decals. Its been a royal pain on filling and sanding the seems. And I have the NKC-135 to do later.

How is the seem work on the -97? I’ve thought about picking one up to add to the tankers I have. Also, how is the interior detail? The KC-135 has so much detail in the cabin, but you cant see any of it. Even with doors open.

You can see in photo 5 theres a nasty gap a little over an 1/8 inch that is on both eings top and bottom and also where the engine neccels atatch as for interior there nothing but a cockpit. So lets just say i wont build this one again.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Looks nice! I’d say snap up two or three F-84 kits (not sure which F-84 variant they started the IFR with) and you could have one drinking with two standing by in formation.

That looks good Rob. As for suggestions as to refueling something, the KC-97 had a long career with the last one going out of service sometime between 1975 and 1980. So you have a pretty good choice to choose from. They also could refuel Navy planes (with an adapter) so that just adds to it. But I would choose between the Hasegawa B-47 and the Monogram B-52D.

Well, an early B-47, of course! The Hasegawa kit. Somewhere around here I have photo of a B-47 prototype on the boom of a KC-97. I hope I can do as nice a job on my KC-97 as you did on yours. Another similar set I would like to get done is the KB-29/F-84G combination that did the first jet crossing of the Atlantic. So many models, so little energy and talent!

John

Nice job on the build, Rob! It looks quite impressive.

Mark

Nice build, everything looks well done. Like the silve the best, nice smooth finish.

There is one of these on static display outside the airport here where I live, so its kinda cool seeing this one.

WOW Rob… very impresive model. Looks great.

Very good build! [tup] I can’t wait to see the finished dio!!!

I have wanted to do that kit with a Hasegawa OV-10A, like this…

or I guess I could use the Testors 1/48 in a forced perspective shadow box?

Or maybe something a little simpler like this…

A very nice job!

Sorry it took so long to get back internet was down Thank you all for the great comments, I looked for the B-47 at the LHS but no luck and i kinda ran outa room here.[BH]

Hey just got back from the holidays with the family…looks really good…better than I expected. Not that I thought you would do a bad job …I just thought it would…welll…ohh never mind…Looks great. Progress Dog Approved!!![dinner]

Hey Rob, This is a nice build & personally, I think a Convair B-36 wpuld look pretty good hooked to the boom[:D] Maybe even a B-47 in formation with it awaiting it’s turn [:-^]

Thanks guys, Ed i dont think so i think i need something smaller.

Ok The RB-36 and the F-4 or the F-105
