KAMAZ 65201 w/ Kanglim

Modeling Subjects Armor

Hello!
I want to introduce you a model of stick boom crane Kanglim KS-3105 based on Kamaz. May be some of elements will be useful for models of armor.
For truck I used model of Zvezda #3698 s-22 Greyhound. There are no 4x8 truck (scale 1:35) so I decide to use frame, cabin, some parts of suspension from Grayhond.

Firstly, I made frame shorter, redone front suspension (because original kit is 8x8 but I need 4x8) , added air tank assembly

Greyhound’s wheels were too big so I used 3d-printed wheels. For fenders I used soft tinplate.

The most difficult part was crane. Because I built European truck, I chose Kanglim crane because it’s on of the most popular in Europe. So I used pictures and drawings from internet.

I made column from soft tinplate, base from old plastic cards.

…arm of the crane was made by soft tinplate, parts of plastic, wire. Workman basket is from tinplate and thin plastic tubes.

… rear outrigger was made by plastic. Hydraulic line is wire. Actually hydraulic line was one of the most difficult part. Unfortunately the back of the truck hides all of hydraulic. But also it hides some of mistakes. There are no p.t.o. system and pump system . If it’ll be Palfinger or Fussy crane I couldn’t have hide this mistakes.

tools and drums in boxes and different things in the back were made from plastic, wires, wooden , paper and rubber.

Paint: Tamiya (spray paint and brush), pigments and fixer MIG and Wilder. DecalsI made in graphics program.

As you can see I try to use usual materials for model, there are no photoetched (almost). It took a long time but model was interesting.

Oh yeah, it’s a beauty!

I just love the air lines made in copper! And you combine nice and clean scratchbuilding with very good subtle weathering!

Now many folks will have that Pantsir built, but only you will have a civilian 8x4 Kamaz!

thanks for your comment. Yes trere is scratcbuilding . For example I used tubes from cosmetic cream. It,s perfect copper and tinplate. Traffic cone was made from details from computer hard drive (there are rubber cone in old model). Headlights from transparent ruller .

But some elements i bought , for example chain (RB-model). By the way may be you have idea how to paint chain,because use paint was bad decision. I used pigments but it’s not reliable.

If you want a metal chain to have a dark, oxidized look to it, Birchwood Casey Gun Blue works well for that. It will chemically discolor the metal to make it look old and you don’t have to worry about it coming off.

I use it on photo etch chaff and flare buckets on military aircraft to make them look weathered.

thanks for advice. Interesting way. there were another old way to do bluing:heat metal and put in motor oil, but i think special liquid is more effective

And It is a pity that so few civilian cars are produced at 1-35 scale. As i know icm, zvezda and meng produce some civilian cars 1-35.

Yes, the “cold blue” liquid is less likely to melt solder joints–a positive thing.

Sometimes you need to look in different catalogs, too–both the model shipbuilding and model railroad communities have liquid “blackening” chemicals for various metals.
