Just treated myself..........

Good afternoon chaps,

I’ve just been up the LHS with a few quid to spend. After a LOT of mmm’s and ahhhh’s I decided to go Dragon again and picked up the StuG III with Herr Wittman Commanding!

I’ve always liked this piece and seeing as I’m limited to a single action AB and an excellent selection of brushes I’m limited to monotone paint schemes at present (the new AB & compressor will be coming at the end of Feb). A bit of sensible weathering should have this looking just the job and it should keep me busy for a while too.

It looks like a super kit, no PE but it does have metal grills. The Wittman figure looks far better than anything I’ve seen by Tamiya-a lot bigger too!

It doesn’t have the one piece magic tracks, it has the single piece L&L jobs. What do you guys do when it comes to painting these? Do you assemble them on tank and then remove them in sections after the cement has set to paint them, then re fit? I can’t see how I can do a decent paint job when the links are fitted and in place?

Anything I should know about this kit btw?

Many thanks guys,

Ben [t$t]

Ben,

It’s not a bad kit but shows its age. I built this one in 2008 and kept the build log here: http://www.bpmodels.net/Model/Album/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=33 HTH and look forward to seeing what you do with this one!

Having a single action air brush does not limit you to monochromatic paint jobs! Masks and stencils will allow even the simplest SA brush (Badger 360 or Paasche H) do camouflage, while brushes like the Badger 200 series can do anything a dual action can do, except change line width “on the fly”.

Hey thanks Bill,

That was EXACTLY what I needed-a step by step guide and recommendations for use of colours on filtering/washes etc.

I’ve printed that off entirely and have put that in the box. Honestly that will help me no end [:D[

As some of you will know I’m off to Ireland on Monday so I won’t be able to get my teeth into this until I return.

Thanks again Bill,

Quite true-I’ve also got another kit on order that will DEFINATELY warrant a cammo scheme. If I haven’t got my compressor by then I’ll be getting the Blu-Tak and masking tape out and using my current AB.

Yeah as BGrigg pointed out, a single-action airbrush will still serve you just fine for camo.

As for your track question, I assemble mine in runs of about 4-5 tracks a piece, then stick them into two long lengths (One for top of track, one for bottom). When the glue has almost set, I wrap them around the wheels. When fully set, remove from model, paint, and stick back on.

Seems like we modellers are always treating ourselves [:)] nice aquisition, look foward to seeing your project.

Thankyou guys,

I’m looking forward to getting this one started. For a Dragon kit it doesn’t look too mind-bending and the build itself is fairly straightforward.

I’m off on holiday on Monday so I could start it tomorrow but am thinking about leaving it it until I get back so I can make a fresh start on it. I suppose I could get the roadwheels sorted and get the ejector holes sorted (see Bills link).

Saying that I’ve got my little 1/72 Panzerjager to build so I might have a play with that over the weekend.

Black Hawk Down is on TV now so I’ll bid you all goodnight!!!

how about that…
that’s the exact same kit that is next on my list.

I’m just finishing up some figures and accessories on my long-haul project, and hope to start snipping sprue on the StuG at the end of next week.

I’ll be interested to see how yours goes.
