I am looking to get started in modeling. Can anyone help me with a list of the bare minumum I need as far as tools go, to make my modeling experience as enjoyable and rewarding as possible. Any and all suggestions are certainly welcome. I am looking to start off with a Corsair, which version is still undecided. Thank you everyone for any help.
If you want the bare bare minimum, Testors sells sets of 8 paints (or is it 7+thinner?), a paint tray, 3 brushes, glue, sanding films, and a knife (with non-replaceable blade). Add some newspaper to protect your work surface and some toothpicks to spread the glue, and I would consider that both the absolute minimum and a decent start. As you grow in the hobby, you’ll get a feel for what you want/need. I’ve seen them at Wal-mart and Fred Meyer.
I would also suggest a toolbox or caddy to keep everything in.

As for the bare minimum, outside of the kit ofcourse, you will need a hobby knife, a sanding stick, some glue, you can start with the good old Testors tube glue, and some toothpicks to spread the glue.
As to the painting, one or two brushes will suffice for detail painting, and for the overall colour of the vehicle/aircraft, I suggest you get a can of spray paint, as it’s easy and quick.

I have just restarted in modeling myself, oddly enough I built a Corsair.
From my recent experience I would recomend choosing the model first, then acquire supplies. This way you can purchase paints as you need them, without having a large cash out lay at the start.
Somethings you will want to purchase all at once are:
A xato knife is a must.
I used the old faithful tube glue to start with.
Brush wise, I started with the cheap Testors white plastic handle ones and can honestly say, avoid them. For a buck or 2 more, you can get some really nice brushes that do a much better job…
Some sort of sanding item would be nice also, sanding boards are really nice, but you could use the black faced wet-sanding paper from the local hardware store if you wanted. I happened to have some of the sandpaper laying around from a furniture refinishing project, so I used that, I have since purchased sanding boards.

hmmm… bare minimum. I must say I am no longer at the bare minimum having acquired most tools that everybody here uses. However, I will say that testors tube glue is excellent, and what I used until recently. (I now use testors liquid cement in the black bottle with the needle). the starter kit mentioned is very good. I would reccomend an airbrush to start out with but that’s just me. Eventually you will acquire the other things you need, like hold and fold, AB, regulator, compressor, needle files, future, decal set and so on.
