Just saw a very rare treat in the sky!

Aluminum Overcast was here in Phoenix a few weeks ago, at Deer Valley Airport.

Yup, she travels all over the US. I had a chance to tour her while I lived in Michigan. She is the restored B-17 of the EAA in Oshkosh, WI and tours the whole US every year

I have some pictures of her when she was here.

The closest I’ve come to an experience like this was twenty-plus years ago, when I was living in Newport News, Virginia. That’s a few minutes’ flying time from Langley Air Force Base. The base had contracted with a private firm that operated three or four well-maintained antique jets as target tugs. One day on the way home from lunch I heard a loud noise overhead, looked up, and saw an immaculate, white-painted F-86 Sabre flying in close formation with an F-15. Of course I didn’t have my camera.

WHOAH!!! The P-40 is a great plane…that’s my third-favorite WWII plane, just behind the PBY-5A Catalina (my FAVORITE) and the F4U Corsair. That’s crazy that you actually saw one…

Can you help me with my modeling decision? Just look at my posts!

BLESS YOU BlackWolf3945 !!! Those are the best pics I’ve ever seen of these aircraft !!! My grandfather was in the Army Air Corps and I’ve seen a lot of unbelievable pictures in the past of WW II aircraft but never as crisp and clear as these, they look like they were taken yestaerday !!! I’m a P-40 nut, I know these are either B or C versions, god these are beautiful !!! By the way just for the WIP or those reading, the only Merlin engined P-40s were the F and L models (difference betwen the two was the F model was basically an D/E model and spec except for the cowling area, you didn’t have the upper intake snorkel and the L model just about the same except the tail boom was longer). If you ask me I’d take the P-40E all day long but the F/L models, with the more streamlined cowling area, looked prettier !!!

Well it took forever but I found the images I took at Beverly airport. Here’s the B-17 and Yak 9 two- seater.

This was pretty awesome. I was in Duluth, MN and was outside the harbor bridge watching a big cargo ship go under it. Then two F-16s from the fighter wing based a few miles outside the city roared overhead. That was great.
