It’s coming along slowly but surely. [:D]
Man this thing needs a lot of paint.
I filled the 1/3 oz. cup of my Omni 4000 about 3/4 of the way two times to paint this thing. [(-D]
It starts to get exciting at this point because I can envision the decals and weapons load on it which won’t be too far away. If there’s one thing I like almost as much as airbrushing it’s doing the decals. [8D]
surprise, surprise!!! mike building a strike eagle!![:o)] looking great mike. the workbench is looking sweet too. mine hasn’t seen that kind of organization in quite sometime. one question, how did you hold this jewel while airbrushing it? keep up the good work my friend. later.
Thanks guys, the encouragement is always appreciated.
Frank,
Yes it is the Revell 1/48 kit. It will be wearing the 391st decals with a weapons load from Operation Enduring Freedom of five GBU-12’s, six Mk 82 slick bombs, two AIM-120’s, and two AIM-9 Sidewinders. [:D][;)]
Chris,
I wore nitrile gloves and held the Eagle with two fingers in the engine intake openings. With flat paints they dry so fast that you don’t really have to worry about setting the model down after painting it as long as you are real careful.
I did set it down lightly on a hard surface and then inserted a piece of 1/2" aluminum pipe into the engine opening to hold it and then stuck the pipe in a vice to let it dry a bit before bringing it in from the garage
only problem with WWII birds is there is no engine intake. i have my stang sanded and polished for the gloss black primer and i know thats gonna be delicate. im brainstorming a way to hold it so i dont have to touch it at all. probably end up doing one side at a time. the lacquer will dry quickly. once again, nice work. later.
Coming along nicely Mike. Too bad you didn’t have the Promodeler kit [:)]. Your work bench is disgusting. No modeler should be that neat and organized.
well, you may laugh, but im thinking of running a 2" drywall (predrill a small hole 1st ofcourse) screw right up under the prop connection rod(this area wont be seen when complete)and leave about an inch of the screw sticking out of the bird. i can then put the screw in my vice and rotate the plane as needed. im probably gonnna drag out the stang from the airbrush fodder pile and try it there first before my current stang has to go to the dreaded fodder pile. later.
Thanks Rick. Yes, I know, the Pro Modeler kit rules. [:D]
My buddy Gip is going to send me a Tamiya 1/32 Strike Eagle one of these days and then I will have a real sweet Eagle to build. I don’t know where I’ll put that monster at though as it is so big. [%-)]
Neat and organized? It is cleaner than that sometimes [:D]
I hate clutter but it is inevitable in this hobby isn’t it? [(-D]
I guess I have kind of an obscession with things in their place sometimes.
Maybe the Prozac the doctor gave me the other day will fix that. [:-^]
Mike, nice job so far. I need your help, I have the Hasegawa F-15E, and I have read that I guess it is not a realistic rendition of the Stike Eagle. I wish I knew that before I bought it. I have some serious cosmetic surgery the cockpit. I put it together before I painted it, thinking I could paint it later then found out I couldn’t, when I tried to pull it apart, I ran into trouble. I think I can fix it, but my question is that the pylons underneath are not accurate? At least I don’t think they are. Is there anywhere I can get the right ones? How is the ProModler ones modled, if I bought that kit which I intend to eventually, can I duplicat that area or will it not fit? Any help from any of you will be appreciated. Thanks. Take care.
I’m not sure about that Hasegawa kit and the problems with it’s accuracy, but I would think your best bet would be to ask this question over at the F-15E Strike Eagle forum’s chat room at this link: http://www.f-15estrikeeagle.com/
The guys over there work on these planes and some are even pilots so they are the best source of information you can find.
There are also reviews of a few of the F-15E kits on that site and there is one for the Hasegawa 07021 (P21) kit if that is the one you have.
The guy who reviewed it said that he used the Paragon 4805 F-15E Strike Eagle Update Set for 1/48 Hasegawa Kits, so maybe that is what you need.

Dear MikeV:
You said that you are using the Revell 1/48 Eagle. Is it a good/decent kit? Wouldn’t mind building it myself. I have just bought the Tamiya F-15J 1/48. Looks really tasty.
I also have the Italeri 1/48 A/C Eagle and the Academy 1/48 F-15E Strike Eagle. I like to buy similar kits form different manufacturers and compare.
I noticed that you didn’t have the tail-fins on when you were painting. Is there a reason for this? Just curious as I will soon be starting one myself.
Your Eagle looks great so far.
