did the Russians have some sort of anti tank weapon. The German had a panzerschreck and a panzerfaust. The U.S. had the Bazooka and Britian had a piat gun. So what did the Russians use as a hand held anti tank weapon.
I know the Russian had a AT rifle… I don’t have my ref here right now though ,to find the name of it…
I assume you’re asking about infantry level AT weapons. The Red Army had two effective AT rifles; the model 1941 PTRD and the model 1941 PTRS. DML makes an excellent set of Soviet AT riflemen.
The weapons were very effective and greatly feared by German tankers (besides other anti-tank artillery weapons, of course). They are why schurzen was developed for later war German tanks.
I think there were a few recoilless rifles, but I guess the infantry was so expendable that comparitively exotic and high value weapons were not worth developing and distributing in the early war. Once the tide turned, the success of the T-34, SU series, AT guns and stickybombs was probably seen as enough.
Oh and don’t forget attack dogs with explosive backpacks [X-)]
anti-tank dogs? Man, I gotta get me one of them!
Didn’t the Soviets receive some M1 Bazookas early in US invovlement?
the problem with the anti-tank dogs is that the Russians trained them with Russian tanks. At the first sounds of battle, the dogs ran under Russian tanks to hide!
-They did have both the PTRS & PTRD anti-tank rifles in 14.5mm, & US Lend lease M1 Rocket Launchers
Semi-related:
I do know that the Finnish army had some nifty A/T weapons that they used against the Russians in the Winter War. The college I attended had a pretty extensive collection of military memorabilia donated by alumni, and I was lucky enough to get to work there for my work study program. (I had lots of fun disassembling/reassembling the Schmeissers, Lugers and P-38s) - and they had two Finnish anti-tank rifles (I’m guessing around 25mm) mounted on skis rather than wheels. I was told by the curator that they were two of only 4 evere made of that model, and they looked pretty lethal - very low profile and long, tapered barrel with a flash suppressor. I wasn’t allowed to mess with them, though. Dangit.
I’m guessing it had to have been this one, since IIRC it was the only ATR the Finns produced: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L-39_20_mm_Lahti
Yeah, the AT Rifle pretty much owns in Red Orchestra.
The panzers never see where you are.
[oops]
Thanks, Agamemnon - that sure as shootin’ is he one! I guess there were more than just 4 made, though.
