A couple of weeks ago we had some beautiful weather around here (we’re back to snow now) and it was nice enough I could go out on my patio and put the final flat coat on a couple of models and call them done.
I’ve wanted for several years to see what an ME-163 Komet would look like in Italian markings. Finally I had some spare Italian decals hanging around and I found Academy’s nice little 1/72 Komet in a local craft shop. It was time for them to meet[8)].
Her’es the result. I did it up in a scheme similar to the North African theatre. I suppose those Liberator crews who flew from those parts were lucky something like this didn’t acctually materialize.
This is really more of a prototype, someday I’ll do it in 1/48 or 1/32.
I love the dirty bottom!!! And the fact it’s in unfamiliar markings is very intriuging, makes it into a whole 'nother type of aircraftm instead of…“oh look another Komet…yey”…it really adds umph to your piece!!!
Thanks a lot guys, I think whenever it is that I decide to do her up in 1/48 or 1/32 the only change I’d make is to find roundels without the white in them and do the painting with an airbrush instead of by hand.
A little Off-The-Wall, but an interesting build. How did you like the Academy kit? Iv’e got one on the shelf but haven’t got around to building it yet. Looks good in the box anyway.
I think the Academy kit is a real gem especially for such a small subject in 1/72. No major fit issues, not a bit of filler needed. With the exception of the Italian decals and replacing the pitot tube with a metal one made from a sewing needle, what you’re looking at here came straight from the box.
The towing tractor in the kit also looks nice, I’m considering building it up, but mine has some warpage to it and I’m trying to do a bit more research on the colours that Italian ground support vehicles wore in North Africa first.
