Just sat down and did a quick inventory on kits and paints.
I have 21 kits that are in the box - just completed the P-61 Black Widow. (I would post pictures but I don’t know how.)[BH][sigh]
I will be starting the Tamiya Do 335A Pfeil tomorrow.[8D][:D]
Now for the paints. I have about 90 different colors of paints. Is this excessive??[V] Or is this about normal??[:D]

For the number of paint bottles, I agree with rjkplasticmod; normal. On the kits, well, you’ve got me beat by about twice my unbuilt collection. But of coures, I’m a high school junior with only a part-time job…[:D]

I need more kits! I need more paint! I have maybe 35 unstarted kits with 4 or 5 more started. Not going to count the paint and more is on the way.
No, that just means that you’re obsessed and are an impulsive buyer! [:D]
Seriously, though that’s quite a collection of paints more than normal, you’ll never know what paints will be needed in your future projects so that’s quite a good investment. I wouldn’t worry about it – I have almost the whole color range of Tamiya Acrylics myself, and I haven’t included the MM enamels and acrylics and Gunze acrylics yet! [:)][8D]

I gave up any hope of being normal long before I entered this hobby - but that has nothing to do with my inventory.
Ya got more paints than me. But then I don’t go out and buy “Pre-1943 british tire rubber in the mediteranian theatre” kinda colors. I mix some of my own and I’m not picky.
Y’also got more kits than me. I’m lookin at 3 in progress, 6 or 7 purchased but yet to be built, and hoards untold in the “gee that would be great to build” corner of my head.
I use to think I had a lot of unbuilt kits… until I joined this forum and saw some of the STAGGERING collections people have on here!! [:o] The one that comes to mind was the post with several basement shots, each showing shelves that were stacked from floor to ceiling with Models! I don’t remember who had it, but I remember the pictures! [:)]
I usually keep between 20 - 25 bottles of fresh paint on hand, and normally have two kits in-progress at any given time. My big problem now days, is staying motivated to work on them after I get all the hard stuff done. Getting old I guess. [:o]

PAint part sounds about normal for me… I have probably 75 - 85 bottles… I only have 5 kits lined up unbuilt right now… but maybe I could use this as ammo to get the wife to let me order some more!!! “Honey all those other guys have at least 15, you want me to get good like them, right?” haha

lol I have 2 unstarted kits and one started…and about 15 things of paint…I think im little behind…
I don’t have much paint,but I have a stash of “unbuilts” that would make me cry if the house burned down.
I have over 100 kits with four more kits and the decal sheets coming. I love my fiancee.[:D][:D] Plus my line will be here for my new airbrush and I can finally get all the ones I am working on now out of the way.
I have about 50-60 different paints and 20-30 unbuilt kits. I just dont have the room for all the kits I want.

You probably don’t have all of the paint colors you need - I’ve got about that - and there’s a few jars I’d like to go and get - but I’ll wait till I need them for the particular project that requires it.
For the models on boxes, you’ve not been going overboard. I know a guy (manager of a model shop) who has about 1000 unbuilt kits. And the number rises every month. I’ve got just under 100.
And I intend to build every one of them.
I build only WW II aircraft from any nation, which means I need a lot of different camo colors. I also have a lot of metallics, so my paint jar collection is in the neighborhood of 250 bottles. Unbuilt kits, at this point, is around the 150 mark. I can always find SOMETHING to do to keep me out of trouble ! [(-D]

Plus a few hundred kits in the attic that are either doubles, or I don’t want any more, plus a couple hundred Trek kits I stocked up on when Ertl announced their discontinuance…
I know this sounds outright bizarre, and illogical, but having my 300-odd kits burned up in a fire was sort of a blessing in disguise. At least 50 of them were 1/72nd Hasegawa or Hasegawa/Minicraft boxings, that were sub-par even when I bought them all from a going out of business toy store in 1983. But I kept buying, and if it was cheap, it didn’t matter that it was a subject I wouldn’t build in a million years. Then, in the mid-80s, we had this huge technological leap in scale modeling that made most of my kit collection frankly obsolete.
No, what I cry over after these first few years have passed are the maybe 40-50 kits that were outright rare gems, like the Koster kits: the A-20, Siemens-Schukert D III and IV, Fokker F VIII, then there’s that O-1 Birddog that was the only kit the company made before going under, and the AM stuff for it, and things like that. Then there were all the Eduard and Verlinden and Aeromodel aftermarket things I lost that I can’t in the forseeable future afford to replace, and most awful of all, the thousands of magazines (complete set of FSM, and almost complete Wings/Airpower, bound), OOP Squadron Signal books, Detail and Scale…well, I don’t need to bore anyone further. You get the point.
But the real point is, when I began to rebuild, with less money, I became much more selective. I can’t name but one or two of the perhaps 40 kits I’ve stockpiled that I’ll never build, and those two are 1/72 kits, and not bad ones. Same with books. I don’t buy reference books I’ll never use.
But paint – hey, you can’t ever have enough paint. You’ll never know if you might need it, and if you run across a brand of paint that’s not available to you normally, jump all over it if it’s good stuff. I must have 400 various bottles of paint, and all of those are still fresh.
If I could just get rid of this cheapo airbrush. As I once told you guys, it’s so cheap (a knockoff of the trusty and fine old Badger 350), that Paasche is ashamed to stamp their name on it, even though they sell it. It’s one step up from that execrable all-vinyl-plastic airbrush that Aztec tries to palm off on beginners (unless it’s OOP, as it should be). No metal parts on it, a complete piece of garbage.

So, though my kit collection be smaller, and growing slowly, I still have many reference books and magazines no one else will ever have, and I have kits I know I want. So I don’t need anyone to cry for me.
