Well, here’s some finished pics of my P51-D from Hasegawa (1/72). I didn’t do much special to it, other than add some seatbelts from masking tape, some guns from syringe needles, and an antenna from fishing line. I have some brief build notes in the Mustang Group Build thread here: http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?page=11&TOPIC_ID=24742
Metal finish is Humbrol Flat Aluminum MetalCote, with Testor’s Dull Lacquer over top of everything. In retrospect, I wish I would have used something a bit shinier for the fuselage (Alclad2), but I’ll take what I’ve got for now. All of the markings are kit decals, which worked very well.
Great Jumpin’ Jacques! Really a very attractive Mustang you have there. I’ve seen plenty of beautiful P-51s here but they’re in 1/48. This one is in 1/72 and that’s my scale. I guess this got me inspired to start on on my Pacific mustangs.
Snowy - I put a coat of Future on before the decals. I don’t think they would have stuck to the Humbrol Metalcote paint. The silver would easily rub off on your fingers and I had a heck of a time getting Parafilm to stick to it. So, I went with the Future, then decals, then Future again, then Testors Dull Lacquer. The paint doesn’t quite look the same anymore, but I don’t think there were too many other options.
BTW, I notice in the Mustang Group build, that Pix and woodbeck are painting the ‘colors’ before the NMF. Based on what I learned building this plane, that is a really good idea. At least with the Humbrol Metalcote, putting the masking material on the colored areas would be much easier than putting it on the NMF…
