Jake,
Hope all is well. I’m working on the Dudley Pope books myself. Thanks for the heads up on the old lady. I want to read those books one of these days.
Chris
I’ll check him out.
Thanks
Jake
Picked up the first book in the series from the bargain bin and I’ve been hooked since. I’m a “Landlocked Landlubber” so a lot of the details he goes into about shipboard living at that time are beyond me but I still find it interesting reading. Great series and looking forward to his latest work.
Have any of you people read the Patrick O’Brian series from which the movie Master and Commander was taken? I am afraid O’Brian spoiled me for any other historical sea novels, including the Hornblower series. Glad I had read them first.
As for deciphering the seamen’s terms, I got a copy of “A Sea of Words” by Dean King and found it very helpful while reading the series. “The Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea” was another helpful tool in reading sea series books.

I found a hardback copy of Stockwin’s “Artemis” in the discount rack, and I liked it. My personal favorite in nautical fiction is Frederick Marryat, who was a midshipman under Lord Cochrane, and eventually captained a frigate. “Peter Simple” and “Percival Keene” are two of my favorite books. I also really liked “Doctor Dogbody’s Leg” by James Norman Hall. The only Dudley Pope book I read was non-fiction, about the mutiny on the HMS Hermione (which, if I recall correctly was recaptured by none other than HMS Surprise).

I’ve read most of Julian’s book and enjoy them.

I’ve read all of Stockwin’s books, excellent books. I’ve read all the Horatio Hornblower books too and am on #20 of 26 in Alexander Kent’s Bolitho novels. A few excellent sources for Nautical book listings are http://www.mcbooks.com http://www.nauticalfiction.com/ http://www.bazillionbooks.com/sail.html http://www.gutenberg.org/ http://www.sailingnavies.com/show_authors.php http://www.sea-room.com/ and a free PDF pub on ship modelling at http://www.warriorgroup.org/WtoWDownload.htm
I’ve also compiled a listing in WOrd format of a number of nautical books I intend to read and would be willing to share it with anyone who sends me an email and requests such
