I just started on the very nice 1/72 ju 87D 5 from fujimi. It shows in the directions to open the under wing holes for dive brakes. But is a D5 supposed to have dive brakes? Because instructions indicate that the builder should remove the jericho trumpets but makes no sense to have dive brakes without them. Im doing a Hungarian machine if thats of any help…
Fujimi is correct. D-5’s had dive brakes. Not all Ju-87’s had the sirens. What makes no sense about having dive brakes but not sirens?
Not sure, it just didnt “sound” right to me and i needed clarification. Im gonna be building a whole family of Stukas n i need some good references
Try Googling for the information - from what I see, the early D-5 came from the factory with the dive brakes installed and the Jericho Trumpets removed. There are some pics out there of D-5s without dive brakes but with the mounts for them still on the aircraft. And most of the D-5 that survived to the end of the war didn’t seem to have either the dive brakes or the mount points. And by the time the D-5 entered the service, I imagine most of the Soviet Army had figured out what the noise of Jericho Trumpet was and knew that it was time put put as much steel in the air as possible. (The “Golden BB” has knocked more than one airplane out of the sky!)
The sirens were removed from the early D-3 on wards. The only versions of the Ju 87 not to have dive brakes were the G models. I have never read anything about the D-5 not having them, though the crew could remove them for some reason. But seems a bit silly if they were doing diving attacks. I am also on a mission to build as many Stuka variants as possible, so will look forward to seeing your builds.
For references, the Squadron books can be useful, Airdoc also do a very good one. Two other is would suggest are one from the Black Cross series, Vol 5 by Helmut Erfurth and Schiffer have two books on the 87. These books give some good info on variants. The Squadron book may be a little out, especially when it comes to the night attack stuka’s, but then Squadron should always be treated carefully.
