Jo-han Mercedes 500K- finished

Started this old Jo-han kit.

Started several subassemblies. In this picture are the frame and some suspension, the engine, and various body parts. I always start finishing the body early, as it usually takes me quite awhile to get a decent finish. I am using Dupli-color acrylic lacquer, and it went on great.

Looking good so far

What’s the actual color you used on the body?

Great subject and I’m looking forward to seeing you finish it.

Hi Don!

Aha! The one with the body by" Sindelfingen". I have always loved that car and how it looked even standing still.

It is called Dark Torpedo Red. I would call it maroon, but I guess maroon is a dark red anyway.

Same here, and a friend gave me the kit.

Boy does that bring me back. The color is beautiful it suits it.

Aha! Now that’s a friend!

Don, great choice on the color. I built the 540K with the Sindelfingen body years and years ago (old Monogram kit I think) but it was the open version. I would love to get ahold of a coupe, it just looks so classy imho. Looking forward to keeping track on your build. Great work on the paint job!!!

Looking great. You lucky dog. That kit is made of unobtanium.

Hi Mike;

No, I believe that it only appeared as an open and or closed car with JOHAN

Yeah, now that I think about it you’re probably right about it being Johan. I remember being amazed by the independent rear suspension on something from the '30s

Hi all,

Monogram did have a coupe version

Jose

There are slight differences between the 540 version (Monogram) and the 500 version, (Johan), so they are likely seperate molds, but very similar.

Kinda like comparing the Revell and AMT 67 Chevelle kits.

Got the frame all done, with engine installed. Sorry for the bad photo- I think I left camera on automatic rather than aperture-priority- no depth of field.

Hi Again Don!

Hey ,you’re jumping all over the place. Just like me! You are right about the two kits mentioned. The differences are miniscule, but they are there. What you’ve done so far looks great!

When clicking on the picture it gets larger and very clear!

Got some more work done. Wow, there are sure enough chrome geegaws on that thing. I thought Detroit invented the chrome barges in the fifties. Now I know where they got the inspiration. Most small parts mount with a cylindrical boss into a hole. Problem is, the holes are never the right size- too big or too small. Have to measure pin size and select a drill. Fortunately, I just bought a new numbered drill set. Got the exaust stacks on last night- both too long. Had to cut about 1/8 inch off both ends of both pipes.

That engine compartment is pretty dusty! Should have cleaned it out before a sunlit shot. BTW, installed a scratchbuilt radiator core. The kit had a top tank, but no core and you could see through to grill.

Sorry about poor depth of field. Camera accidently got bumped from aperture priority to auto mode.

Thats a beauty Don. I love those “Art Deco” cars, especially the “Boat Tails”.

[t$t]This came out beautifully, very classy classic.
