Was there a system used to mark the contents of tGerman Jerry cans so that they did not contaminate something? I think that the Germans had a white cross on the water cans, did they mark gasoline or antifreeze? What did they use for motor oil & hydraulic fluid? Square tins in 1 to 5 liter size?
Does anyone know of a manufacturer or resin or white metal 1/35 ones?
There was a system used and I ran across it online within the past month… that’s the good news, the bad news I am not immediately finding the site again!!! I will search again tomorrow, but I do remember that the colors were standerdized early in the war and then largely disregarded later in the war.
youre right about the whit cross for water. For gas and other stuff, I think they had imprinted words on the can its self. I am not 100% sure, but I am pretty sure. Tamiya makes some good, plastic ones. I am not sure if there are any resin or metal ones.
Tamiya makes a few different sets of Jerry cans, both German and Allied. The German ones I got were too thick. At least they didn’t fit well in Jerry can racks. For inexpensive plastic ones, I’ve been told that the best ones are by Italeri. I can’t remember the number, and I’ve found them hard (impossible) to find. But I think they’ve been recently reissued.
Refs I have show them as being either grey or dunkelgelb.
Also, on another thread, I read that the original Tamiya (#35026) offerings were horrible but their newer one (#35186) is fairly good, and that Italeri (#402) and Academy tank equipment set II (#1383) has some decent looking ones, though I have never purchased that kit.
For more expensive and detailed ones, Bego/ Tasco makes some (I think that www.missionmodels.com carries them still).
What I have learned so far on the Jerry cans is that there are several patterns of the stamped imprint on the side and they had WATER, GASOLINE, and DIESEL stamped on the side. Also the SS had their own runes stamped on it, while the Wehrmacht was stamped on the army’s cans. I wonder about the Luftwaffe? and the Kreigsmarine?
Now if I can find answer for the square oil can or what ever they stored lubricants in.
The cans were either tan or dark grey and they usually put a white cross and a white triangle at the top of the spine that went from the centerline to the top, coloring the top corner.
ackman,
Are you talking about the Jerry cans or the square tins? I have seen the white cross on the side for the water cans. Was the white triangle pointing up or down and how big was it/ On the side with the spout or the back side?
