As I near retirement, I thought I’d look for a hobby that’s cheaper than shooting and a little more sedate. Well, I was an avid modeller in the early 60’s and it occurred to me that this might be the thing to do. Well, let me tell you - modelling has changed. I’m a widower with four grown children - so I do have some time. Still working (as a Quality Manager of a carbide cutting tool manufacturer) and the hours there can be demanding, but there are usually free weekends. I served with the Navy’s Seabees in Vietnam (3 tours in fact) and I have an urge to build a diorama of a small detail of Seabees repairing a wooden bridge stucture in Vietnam, some working and some standing guard. I haven’t seen any WWII construction equipment though. I’m not much of a poster - a much better lurker. Great to see such an informative forum.

Welcome!! What did you shoot? My uncle used to run the Sportman’s Club in Middletown and got to most of the big shoots.
Cassibill: Thanks for the welcome. Primarily I shoot handguns. Back in the day when I was in law enforcement I shot some competition, but more recently I shoot just for fun with a group of friends from work. Eyesight isn’t what it used to be, but then that’s just one thing among many that doesn’t work quite the same [:(]
I’m originally from Cincinnati (Clifton/Hughes High) but left there in 65 when I went into the service and resettled in Akron after.

[#welcome] back to the hobby NAVY! Boy are you in for a pleasant surprise if the last time you built models were in the 60’s, things have indeed changed. Remember the old Hawk/Aurora kits when the cockpits maybe consisted of a small plank for the seat and a blob looking figure representing the crew? Not so today, one can spend hours just detailing a cockpit of a 1/32 plane. As for construction equipment? I believe VLS (Model Mecca) makes a 1/35th WW-II bulldozer which might fit into you diorama plans? Figures shouldn’t be a problem to find.
I love target shooting but that’s getting expensive, ammo (5.56, 9mm, and 7mm) seems to be rising in price as fast as gas is, I’m now considering picking up a reloader to cut costs.
Never thought I’d run into shooters on a modelling board!! Seems that guns in general aren’t too well received in most social circumstances. In any event, I have a website at http://www.akronshooter.com if you’d care to visit. I do some reloading from time to time, mostly .45 ACP, cause it’s easy. But, don’t seem to have the time much anymore.
Modelling looks challenging - I just need to learn patience.
I think Uncle Bert shot a little of everything. My family stuck around the Middletown/Hamilton area mostly. A couple strayed up to Dayton and part of my branch (my mom’s folks included) are the ones that came to Indiana. I’ve never shot competitively but a lot of my family do.
Gun talk in a modeling forum. I’ve always liked forums that are diverse. [:)] Ya never know what you’ll find in common with people.
I’m not a hunter, just a plinker. Used to shoot a lot more and thus reloaded, but now since I’ve been in this area, I haven’t shot in over 2 years. [:(]
Building models keeps me busy and out of places I shouldn’t be anyway. Just like I used to do when I could go plinking.
Its tough to shoot 'em, so now I build replicas of them. [:D]
