So I’ve been working on a wargame of WW2 ships and was wondering if anyone could point me to the mounting methods/locations of torpedos on the Mogami, Takao, and Tone classes. Any help would be appreciated as I can’t seem to find information about them anywhere and none of the photos I’ve seen make it clear.

do you see those two openings just below and forward of the two smoke stacks ? those are the tubes in there.I think it’s similar on the other two classes.

Internal explosions blew some of her launch tubes out of position, and they can be seen extended and dropping to the sea.
Okay thanks, I saw that first picture on wikipedia but never would’ve guessed those were the tubes, thanks for the help.
On a side note would the torpedoes swing out to the sides just slightly and fire forwards or would they swing out all the way and fire to the left or right of the vessel?
They could rotated all around.
You know,I know they could be rotated all around,but if they only have one fixed firing position,i’m not sure.

The book “Kaigun” by Evans & Peattie has a long discussion of the developement of the torpedo tube mountings and doctrine on cruisers. The earliest “treaty” cruisers mounted fixed tubes that resulted in the ships being somewhat top heavy. Later ships used a smaller number of “trainable” mounts, ie they could be positioned at any angle so long as the tube was clear of the superstructure. Aiming involved both the angle the tubes were set at and the exact timing of firing them. Most pictures and model kit instructions show the tubes in the “stowed” position. Hope this helps.
