Jagdpanther Hatch

Hi guys

Quick question as I can’t seem to find a good pic.

I’m building Tamiya’s Jagdpanther Late and am onto the painting phase.
I’m dispaying it with the drivers hatch open. Now If I’m right, the underside of the hatch should be the off-white interior colour? Do you agree?

To the best of my limited knowledge, yes. I concur.

No. The white undersides of hatches that were exposed when opened were eliminated (logical if you think about it). Photos exist where you see an occasional white hatch on early-mid war Dk Grey vehicles – but even those were rare. I’ve never seen a photo of a late war AFV with white exposed hatches – especially on a Panther or Panther variant. Go with dk yellow – possibly primer red.

Now this is why I asked. I thought that they might paint them the vehicle colour…thanks for the info guys.

Reiterating / confirming:

Red/brown Primer would be the original colour, with field (or factory) overspraying of exterior colour.

The ivory colour on the rear hatch below is because that hatch wasn’t originally intended to be opened!

Not meaning to nit pick but I’m aware that some late war vehicles didn’t even bother to paint the interiors of hatches – leaving them as primer red. However, wouldn’t the entire interior, including the rear hatch have been left in the red? It seems incongruous to me that the rear hatch be ivory with the upper hatches in red.

What I’m saying is if the AFV was produced at a time where the interiors (and rear hatch) were being painted ivory, wouldn’t we also assume the upper hatches have gotten the attention of being painted in dark yellow?

This is all just wondering…

No, you’re not nitpicking, I just didn’t communicate very well!

You’re right, some of the hatches were sometimes left in primer red.

I haven’t finished that Jagdpanther yet, and will detail that rear hatch, and paint it primer red, eventually.

The floor plates were usually left in the primer colour, but the remainder of the interior would (paint supplies permitting) have been painted ivory.

There are pictures of a preserved Jagdpanther interior here.

Is that in somebody’s lobby?

It’s in the Imperial War Museum, which is an establishment in London. They have a few interesting things there, I understand. I intend to have a look in November to make sure of it.

I thought he meant your photo!!
