For many years I’ve frequented forums and have often heard people talk about getting into a modelling “slump” but I’ve never really experienced that myself until now that is. I’ve been building for over 9 years, having gotten started back in early 2001, and for the first time in that stretch I can honestly say I’ve finally hit a slump myself and have found it increasingly difficult to have the desire to build. My Jagdpanther is 98% complete and is probably partly to blame for the slump hitting in full force. It’s dragged out far longer than I thought it would due to a variety of factors and was originally supposed to be done in a month or less as an easy OOB build. Instead it’s become somewhat of a slog due to interruptions and no “flow” in the build. For example I had a chance to work on it this past weekend but I chose instead to do “other” things and every time I look at it, I know I need to finish it, but just don’t have the urge to actually do it. Normally I get the “spark” of the next build and use that as a motivation to complete the current one and move on to the next one but that “spark” isn’t there either despite spending quite a bit of time in front of the stash ruminating about what to build next.
I know it will pass but just wanted to let those who monitor such things here and elsewhere that I’m still around and posting but just not building at the same old pace as before. I know better than to try to “force” the build and ram things through, so I’m on somewhat of a building break I guess at the moment. I’m sure that things will change in the future and the spark will return in due time…I’ve got some time of later in the month for Christmas vacation and that may just be the thing that turns the corner, have to wait and see I suppose. Try something different. Build a car or a plane. But come back to us. Don’t do want I did when I was a “wingnut” and tried armor for a change of pace[whstl]
Know exactly how ya feel, i have a DML Tiger I and Panther G, 98% done, and can’t seem to find the energy to finish them for some reason, i take them out all the time with the intention of finishing at least one, but i look at them for a minute and back in the box they go, go figure[:(]
wbill, Dont worry too much. I’m sure all of us got this feeling at one time or another. To counter this dreadful feelings, I rotate my modelling from armor to planes to cars and a ship . This change my psych so I can approach each different build with more enthusiasm.
As much fun as Manny 229 build may be you go there you will get nothing done due to to many posts to read.
I have a couple of stalled builds at the moment but I’d finding the motivation to work on them (and getting enjoyment) by making myself spend time on that build before I’m allowed to spend time on ones that are motivating me at the moment.
Another option pick an easy kit out of the stash for an easy non anal build or select one to use as a guinea pig for the new technique you want to try (I personally find that great motivation aslong as its not an expensive kit to get worked up over)
Hi Bill its been a long time bud, sorry to read that you are going through a slump but totally understand, i have been in one for what must be 2 years after several tragic events i couldnt face the bench anymore but for the last few weeks i have found myself getting tempted again and a couple of days ago i jumped in where i left off and actually began building (the same kit i was working on 2 years ago heh all my tools and glue were sat in the exact place i left them ready to go) im taking it slow but enjoying it once more, this is my first foray into the forums in almost as long and it saddens me but until your mojo returns i have quite a lot of your back builds to catch up on, hope your back in action soon.
Bill…don’t pain over it. Do something different…reorganize your stash…set up an inventory…build a spray paint booth…do some serious research for some future projects…or do some different modeling…build a V-2 or V-1 German…yet not truly armor. Or go totally different…a ship or a plane.
I am sure with you change and promotion your entire lifestyle has changed. Also you have been sick a bunch…Start your recovery with a drink…step back and think what you want to do…plan your future work
Like work, you need to take a vacation every now and then…you have been going non-stop for a long time. We will be here when you come back and if you are going to try something for a change…let us know…we will keep an eye out.
Try something different.Personally,I’m sick of dark yellow,German grey and olive drab.I had a blast with the red and yellow paint on the BA-6 I recently finished.I’m currently working on an M 13/40.It’s overall sand yellow but I’m trying the old chipped paint with a pencil look for the first time.I’m having a ball.
BTW,I recently got over a slump myself.Didn’t spend a minute at the bench although I had an 18 day vacation.As soon as I went back to work,the bug bit me.Go figure!
I’m sure the fire will burn again soon for you Bill. I dont think it ever totally dies out when your as passionate about our hobby as you are. Shoot, it took me over a year to build that Wespe, lol, so I know what you mean. Sometimes I just walk away from it for a bit, focus on something else and out of the blue the urge to build will come right back. Everyone has thier own way of dealing with "modelling drought’ and I’m sure you will find yours!![B]
Well, you do live in Texas. Go shoot Bambi’s mom or dad. Then come back and build a diorama of your hunting trip. You could even incorporate a Soldaten from an Aufklarungs Abteilung. Picture a rear guard security unit scrounging for food in the Pripyat Marshes.
Your slump is understandable from my point of veiw. You go full tilt with your in depth WIP updates, photo’s and replies and I have often wondered if you would hit the wall.
We here at FSM truly appreciate your skills, in depth knowledge and insight and it benefits us to make us better.
Thanks guys, really appreciate the support and suggestions. I’m sure something will break through eventually. Mike it hit on the head…the inability to get into a routine lately and with several changes happening in the work arena have taken their toll.

I was building pretty good over the summer, but hit the wall when cammoing up my Pz IV. I resprayed the base once and now it sits. I started an “easy” project and ran into a few problems. Base is on and now it sits. Sound familiar? Fall rolled around and so did football. Done nothing since September. I still can’t finish my Zero, though now my A/C stash has exploded to 10 kits.
I love the building, but have a heck of a time finishing anything unless a few of the many GB’s I signed up for. I have no answer. I just need to get off the computer and get back to the bench myself, but am tired after work. It’s just easier to lounge around.
I hope you snap out of it, probably after the holidays, don’t push yourself. Take care of all that yada yada, then ease back in after the Bowl Games. BTW, my Ducks are playing for the National Title. [:D]
