James, what mark of the merkava is this? Is it possible to tell from the picture?

from what I can see, it’s a Merkava II, but it could be a hybrid Merkava Mk. I… it’s not too clear!

That’s a Merkava 1 destroy by a RPG in Beirut summer 1982 by a Syrian team… later the israeli recover the wreckage… acig.org
But at the present situation the hezbollah are claiming 14 Merkava destroy… I dont think so… probarly thay are mistaken for another vehicles… or just propaganda… Other news indicate only two Merkava destroy so far…

I’ve only heard three destroyed by both CNN and Fox News. It’s called disinformation!!! Why do you think that even the Legend Merkava IV kit is wrong in some different areas… The IDF does not give out it’s true intentions to anyone! secrecy is the highest desire of the IDF!
Merkavas aren’t really that vulnerable to RPG fire are they? I wouldn’t think so, seeing as how it is a premier MBT.

the Merkava has been pretty invulnerable to RPG rounds, but with the earlier mk’s it was found that IEDs were a huge problem with the tanks and had a good tendancy to immobilize or cause some problems. there were some problems with the guerillas (SP?) hiding out in buildings back in the 80’s and hitting the Merks from the top. Any tank is vulnerable at the top… however, I do believe that the IDF has mobilized the Merk IV aswell, which will be more than sufficient to handle that threat! Sooo… ealier mk’s without the “yoni” armour, or roof armour and belly armour might have some issues, and I have seen some basic Merkava II’s moving in convoy on the news too…

Would you by chance know, CDNTanker if IDF is still using large numbers og Magach’s? If so, what number designation. I am unclear as to which Magach equals which US tank.
Magach 1-4 were M48’s?
Magach 7’s are M60A3’s?

I am not sure if they are in use, if any are it would be the Magach 6 Gal Batash, it highly resembles the Merkava IV… however, I’ll look into it for you!
