Is this trouble? Fraud? Scam?

About a month ago I posted here that I have accidently put the decals in the recycleing bin. Gone forever. So I asked here if anyone can help me out. Guy called Doug1 responded, saying that he has spare decals and will mail them to me. I PM-ed him, we exchanged few e-mails and I gave him my address. And that was the end of it. I have never received the decals, he never responded to my e-mails. Should I worry? What happened? Was I sucked into something?

Thanks for your thoughts…

I’m not sure what he could do with only your name and address. Yet, I wouldn’t be surprised that that couldn’t be enough to steal your ID anymore. I would think they’d need your SS or driver’s license to really do damage. Someone recently compromised my Visa card, so life is scary. I hate A-Rods that just can’t leave well enough alone.

Unless you paid money for the decals in advance, it’s just a case of someone offering to help and then not following through…unfortunate, but not fraud.

The guy may have landed in the hospital or may have had a family emergency. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Sorrry about the disappointment. Why not repost what you need?

Since your address is pretty much public record, and that’s and e-mail is all you gave him, I’d think you were pretty safe.

Might have just plain forgot… Sometimes the real world gets in the way here…

Besides, your address is “out there” in WAY more places than an internet forum or emails…

[#ditto] You haven’t said what info you supplied other than your address, but if that is all you have given I agree with the others that you don’t have anything to worry about.

I would also say that the people using these forums are not here to steal someones identity and use it for fraudulent means. We all share a passion of modelling and I honestly believe are beyond anything criminal.

If you’re talking about long time regulars, yes, you’re right. However, there’s nothing stopping an unscrupulous person from setting up an account to try phishing for information. A bit of caution is not unwarranted.

Point well taken. I was thinking on the positve side, but what you say is true in any part of society. Caution should always be used but a little trust goes a long way.

Tigerman, my Visa card got compromised too, there were about 10-15 charges, all in the Milwaukee-Madison, Wi. area, where I’ve never been. The last time this happened was about 2 years ago, and the charge was in a suburb of Phoenix. Prior to that, the only places I actually used the card was Hobby Lobby, Michael’s and Office Max. Wonder if they have a security problem in any of their billing departments?

With a name and an address you would be surprised what someone can do. With nothing more then that, a quick call to a couple of blockbusters in your area, if you have accounts there, and some rather minor social engineering, it would take someone less then 10 minutes to obtain your credit card information.

Regarding if the subject in question here has anything to worry about, I honestly doubt it. I’ve seen the name Doug1 come and go. I’ve had a similar issue once or twice, something never showed up. Things happen, he could have forgotten, he might have lost what he was going to send, he may have ended up in a financial crisis, or his computer with the info simply could have fried and he’s been unable to obtain a replacement. I know that last one has happened to me before.

Also I’ve had similar occasions, then all of the sudden about 2 months later, the item in question showed up. Yet I was never able to get ahold of the person who sent it to me ever again. I once had a friend in Connecticut(I’m in Oregon), send me a CD with a copy of OpenBSD operating system on it, as I didn’t have a broadband connection or a burner, and I wanted to try it out. Seeing as how it’s free, and legally distributable, he sent it to me. 6 months later it showed up on my door step. That is 6 months AFTER he mailed it out. Post office isn’t always the best.

What decals are you looking for? I or someone else may have a set if you are still in need. You can tell from my post count and join date I’ve been here awhile. If I did anything though you could just contact Tigerman, I’ve met him face to face and he lives about a 15 minute drive from my house. I’ve been to his house, but honestly I couldn’t make my way back in a million years unless he gave me directions again. LOL.

If you are considering giving your address to someone like that, check their post count. If it’s pretty low, use the search function and see what they have posted. Try to find a picture of a build or determine if they really are into building. If so, yer probably safe, as I agree that most of us share a passion for plastic(if we are nuts for being so is a debate for another place HAH), and while I wouldn’t say that the people are beyond criminal activities perse, I will say that I don’t believe it really crosses anyone’s mind to do any such thing with such information.

I personally have given my address to 3 people on here. One never sent me anything because I ended up finding what I needed and told him not to. The other that didn’t send anything is because it wasn’t so they could send me anything(Tigerman). The other person sent me the spare decals I needed in time to finish my group build project. They showed up just in time(less then 24 hours to go). I recently recieved a couple of Camaro scripts from a Keith Marks set that someone wasn’t going to be using that I needed for a project I am working on. Usually I can trade or obtain things from members of the local club, but sometimes I can’t. In which case I turn here to the community as a last resort. Why last resort? I really hate asking for things from anybody, especially people I don;t know personally face to face. Yes I would do the same for other people here and have done so, but I don’t know. Anyway I’m getting off track here, and before I go further I’ll stop.

Hope you get what you need.

Were I inclined to do so, the local phonebook is a much better tool than the internet for finding names, numbers, and addresses and there’s no electronic trail left behind… Besides… Crooks are lazy, man… You can blitz a number of towns with their phonebooks much easier than cultivating an internet list of victims.
