i have this kit, and i am doing an OIF dio. i bought the Verlinden M998 conversion set, but am having second thoughts now. i cant find exact photos showing this Hummer with this exact box on the back. can anyone give me real fact on this version, and if its in use today?
oh ok, cool ill go read it. i guess im going to be doing that conversion set. tho i have no experience with PE. maybe ill set it aside and order a new hummer. any suggestions? is the tamiya OIF one the best?
Tamiya’s M1025 or M1046 HMMWVs are best to represent an OIF version for the invasion through about early 2004, before most vehicles had armor packages added to them. No one makes and uparmored M1114 or a HMMWV with add-on armor in kit form. Blast Models does make a couple add-on armor resin sets to add to another kit.
The Verlinden conversion makes a softtop, highback M998. This type is used as 1SGs vehicles, supply vehicles, maintenance vehicles, and general cargo trucks. Most companies have them assigned. They would not usually be forward with the combat vehicles (tanks and Brads) unless they were out of the fight and in a secure area. The hard top M1025 and M1046, as depicted by Tamiya’s kits, would be forward as scouts and anti-tank teams.
thanks, i looked at greatmodels.com and i think i will order the M1046 since it comes with 3ID decals for OIF.
Just to prove that there is a ‘prototype for everything’ (I miss that regular feature in Model Railroader), here’s one of our two-doors. This vehicle was used on almost every combat patrol we went on for the year in Iraq. Note that it is, as far as the Army’s concerned, fully Level II armoured…
NTM
i cant see the pic, can you give us a link?
If you are just wanting to do the cargo bed version, Academy makes a 998 that is a pretty good kit. Some minor fit issues around the hood and windshield area, but you can generally find them on E-bay for under US$8.00. I have built a couple of them and highly recommend them. They are the only company besides Tamiya that I know of that have correct tires BTW.
Odd. Shows up for me.
the photo works for me too
The Tamiya and Academy are the older style bias ply tires. They can still be found on HMMWVs, but are not the most current. They were/are being replaced by a more durable and different looking radial tire. The newer radial tire is only available in resin from aftermarket firms. Check here at Vodniks site for a comparisin of the Blast Models resin radial type HMMWV tires vs. the Tamiya bias ply tires.

Quite a few other companies make the new radial tires as well.
As to the Academy kit, it is a great kit. Until the new Tamiya HMMWVs came out, the Academy ones were considered the best on the market. They are still great kits and you can’t beat the price.
that is one big MG.
never knew until there was a comparison between a human
i have pics of m1114s and 1026s but i have to look though my cd-rs to find some 998s that we armoured up

this one is of the back of a 998 with 2 m240s in the bed

yeah i was at school “doing my work” and the server must have blocked it or something. i got it now. so is the tamiya M1026 the best hummer kit? with new tires.
Tamiya’s are the best on the market now. They do not have the new tires. They have the older style bias ply tires. They are a very good rendition of the bias ply tires. Academy’s are pretty good too. Also Tamiya makes a kit of the M1025, hard top Armament Carrier(comes with (M2 .50 cal or Mk 19 40mm grenage launcher) w/o winch, (M1026 is with winch); and a M1046 Hard top Armamnet Carrier (TOW mounted), w/winch and added armored doors.

The below HMMWV (looks like an M1025 with locally made add-on armor) has the older bias ply tires on it.

Check my post above for a comparison of the tires.
Check AEF designs for a pretty good copy of the newer tires. Well, at least newer than the originals anyway… lol
thanks guys, i think im going to get the M1026, because it comes with 3ID OIF markings. would a TOW equipped M1026 usually run around with an Abrams and a Bradley?
Yes, A TOW equipped HMMWV (actually either a M966 or M1046 is the TOW version) could be seen with tanks and Brads.
Here is more info on resin tire sets if interested: http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/vehicles/misc/hmmwv_wheels.htm
what is the best AM wheels? the Blast Models ones look too thin. the Real Models ones look good to me.
6 in one, 1/2 dozen in the other. Looking at the comparison, the MR ones look the best from the tread and width, but appear too small; RM look best from the front (rim) side, but also look too narrow. I have the Blast set, and they look alright, maybe a little narrow, but still look good once mounted.
would it be good to order the M1046 TOW so that i can get the updated Tamiya Hummer WITH the 3ID OIF decals, and get the Blast Models add-on set and add the M2, and keep the TOW and set it up with the pedestal? do Bradleys ever carry TOW launchers in their racks?
