Is it necessary to wait after putting on an oil wash?

Hi there, is it necessary to wait after putting on an oil wash? I have my water-based paint under a protective coat of future. If i were to mix burnt umber oil w/mineral spirits and apply it to my project would it be wise to let it sit for a couple of hours or days, or just apply and remove with a cloth? I know that when I do the pin wash, i’ll just place on and let it “run” around hatches etc. and leave it to dry.

…hmmmmm, not sure if your question is more about the curing of the base coats before applying the wash or about how long to wait before removing excess wash…

…if it is in regards to the wash, I typically blot off the excess of the major wash right after application (no longer than a few minutes)…

I personally dont wait in fact i use the time while its still workable to work it around and even mix other washes into it to get different effects but i do this gently with a soft brush or thinner damp q-tip.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The ? was for excess wash. The base paint and the future coats have fully cured. I’m planning on mixing my oil paint w/mineral spirits and a drop or two of dawn dishwashing liquid, say a quick prayer and apply the mixture on top of my paint job. I’ll follow your advice and dab off the excess right after application.

DAWN dishwashing liquid!!! NO! Use that if you want to break the surface tension of WATER-BASED washes!–NOT oil or thinner-based washes! You’ll wind up with a mess on your hands–and your model!

You won’t need anything else but the spirits.

I’m glad I have friends, thanks Doog!

The kind of disaster Disastermaster models will NOT be the result if you throw Dawn into your oils mix! I think you would have a chemical gunk roughly equivalent to the stuff that drowns seabirds after an oil spill … if not worse.
