IRIAF F-14

Hi All,

Heres my latest work. Its a 1/72 academy F-14A in Iranian markings. I built this to learn free hand camo with an airbrush. Photos by me!

enjoy!

Fine work. It’s always great to see a subject on here in markings modelers rarely do, for some reason. Certainly doesn’t look like your first free-hand effort to me.
I was surprised to read that the Iranians were able to still get some of their IRIAF Tomcats up to fight the Iraqi Air Force during that long war. Here’s some forgotten historical trivia: In the 1980’s Iran/Contra affair, some of the “arms traded for hostages” (I put it in quotes because it’s my shorthand for “don’t take this for a political opinion, I’m merely quoting from the official record”) turned out to be parts for F-14s. I don’t have the whole list in front of me, but I remember one item was ejection seat rocket motors, and there were some fire control system parts in the deal. On 21 July 1982, two F-14A’s of the IRIAF shot down three Iraqi fighters from more than 50 miles out using AIM-54 Phoenix missiles.
I understand they don’t have any Tomcats airborne now for lack of parts. The fleet was finally cannibalized out of existance, so I read. Osprey has two excellent books on the modern-day Iranian AF, one on the F-14s and and the other on their F-4D’s, E’s and RF-4E’s, with much coverage of the combat history against Iraqi forces.

Good looking Tomcat. Nice work with the AB.

Beautiful model! Does Iran still operate the F-14?

Looks really good.

Are you sure this is your first free-hand camo? You did a great job! The cat sure looks awesome in that desert camo. The fact that it’s 1/72 makes it all the more impressive. You should be proud of this build; I’d love to have it on my shelf. Thanks for the pics.

Nice to see Tom wearing difernt work cloths, thanks for the pics…

Thanks for the kind comment everyone!![:)]

very nicely detailed!

A very nice build, excellent work on the camoflauge… something about the Tomcat wearing those colors just makes it look even more impressive…

Very nice freehand work there Kel, it’s very convincing. Congratulations!

dragonfly

Very nice work on the camo.

thanks evryone, makes want to do another one. This time with a hasegawa molding, hehehe!

very nice pics, i have two `cats waiting to be built, might just make a fun project!!!

Very nice freehand work! That’s a really nice f-14. I’m reminded every time I see one of these nicely executed that I still have to get one of these on my shelves.

By the way, which kit is this?

Take care,

Mark

Beautiful build, kel. Thanks for sharing.

Great work! I built one about 12 years ago myself. It was a load of fun. Yours looks excellent!

Is it true they used some as Airborne Early Warning birds because of the range of their radar and lack of parts for combat readiness? I understand an Iraqi MiG-21 snuck up on one and killed it in the 80’s.
