Iraqi T-55 [war prize - Operation Desert Storm]

Ok, first, background: I am an MP, recruiting Assistant, and a Hawk door gunner for the Iowa ARNG. I am stationed out of Camp Dodge, in Johnston, IA [suburb of Des Moines]. Part of Dodge is the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum. The Museum houses a pretty good collection inside, and outside we have various armour and a couple helos. We also have an Iraqi T-55, BMP, howitzer, and AA gun. All of these were confiscated during Operation Desert Storm. They were flown back to Des Moines, then brought to Camp Dodge. They have not moved since being placed. they are in the original condition from when we took them from Iraq.

I said once that I would never do an enemy vehicle. But after seeing the T-55 up there every single month, I had to do it. So…Tamiya T-55, a metal barrel, and metal tracks. All the damage was reproduced, and it was given a similar terrain. [note- the T-55 is extremely stripped down.]

The actual T-55:

wow, even the tree branches look close enough. looking good, man.

wow that’s a great reproduction man! Well done! I too always say never do the enemy! But I do find myself leaning to do a Syrian T-55 as their cammo and well the T-55 are definately too cool to pass up! Maybe when I’m done my plethora of Israeli AFV’s I’ll get around to one… Looks great man, you should be proud!!!

Wow thats good itz really close to the Picture

An excellent mini-dio… should plop it over in Dioramas, too! The tree really looks good, too!

Amazing work. Looks quite genuine. Love the T-55. I think its quite a unique and important tank, and every armor modeller should have one.

A little OT, but how did you make the tree?

looking good, I agree with the others, cool tree as well.

Regards,

Terry Burke.

Thanks guys. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot of new techniques on this one. An I’m going to throw it over to the dio guys.

I used a Model RR product called Sweetwater. They are real wood trees, various sizes. You get about 4-5 per bag and they are pruned from Sagebrush. Then you stretch Sweetwater polyfiber into small thin sheets and glue it lightly to the tree branches. Then hit it with hairspray [I used Dullcoat] and sprinkle on whatever color foliage you want. I used a German product that is meant to look like actual leaves. I used a medium grean all over, then highlighted the toos with lightgreen. overcoat with Dullcoat and tada. Instant tree.

Wazzup fellow Iowan, I live in Des Moines, Prolly seen ya at the Hy-Vee on Merle Haye rd. Go there all the time.
