So my NMF Mustang is coming right along. This is the first time I have used NMF or invasion stripes. My question is - can I apply the national isignia over the stripes or will the black show through the decals? Do I need to make a stencil and NMF the underlying portion of the decal?
Any useful advice is greatly appreciated!
I would stencil underneath it’s location with a NMF, especially when you consider the stark contrast between the black and the white, as well as how opaque the decal may or may not be, which cannot be determined until it is actually applied.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. Look’s like I’ll be cutting a stencil using the decal as a template. I have a Typhoon with stripes next on the pile. I will mask before hand next time.

What about cutting the decals to follow the marking, using the decal… still on the backing paper…as the stencil to take a sharp #11 blade to score the stripes. Then carefully remove the unwanted stripe decal. Apply the marking in the space.
EDIT: Just read Jon’s post… If those are painted on… Well done… and scratch my idea[:)].

If your going to mask around the area covered by the decal, why not just spray either white or light grey to give a solid background to the decal. No need to go NM as the decal will hide this.

Yes, they are painted on and probably not not spot on as far as the correct dimensions; but they work for me.
Gary - I thought about using a lighter pigment to help the white portion of the decal stand out. I’m using a set of AM decals from Areomaster and checking last night, it appears that there is a NMF border around the bottom portion of the markings. I recon I can just use the decal, with backing, as a template and make the stencil slightly larger to accomodate the NMF border. Think that might do it.

Looks nice and I would do as the others have suggested and using a decal template, use BMF underneath. Just curious, did you lose a white stripe somewhere or were the P-51Bs not striped WBWBW?
Invasion stripes varied considerably as to width, overall size, position and quality of application. Some were very hastily applied with a broom! All the ones that I have seen were three white stripes with two black stripes. Maybe some were just two of each color. Nice job overall on the Mustang.
