internal detail

[:p]when modelling larger aircraft(i.e bombers) like to include other crew positions ,such as navigator and wireless operator stations. do other modellers also like to do this?. or consider it a waste of time as these positions cannot be seen on compleated model.

I personally don’t build alot of bombers or large aircraft, but I know that alot of people who do, like to add that detail. They know it won’t be very visible, but they know it’s there. To a degree. it’s the sme with fighters. Their interiors are alot more visible, but alot of it’s still hidden. I still like to add all the detail I can. I suppose it just makes the model feel more realistic to me.

Just depends on how much you can see from the various windows or open doors. I decided to make removable panels on Monograms 1/48 B-29 to show the crew compartments. I was lucky to have an old kit my brother didn’t want and cut the panels oversized on his and undersized on mine and did a lot of filing and fitting to make the seams at the original panel lines as not to detract from the model when closed up. Of course it’s still on the work bench waiting patiently for years for me to get back to it! I had started a B-17 also but it came with a clear side. I wish they would do it with the B-29 and B-24.

I’d love to update the detail on the pair of 1/48th B-24s I’ve got lurking in my stash, but finding accurate plans/detail pics is tricky. As it happens, quite a lot of the interior of the B-24 is visible if you pose it with bomb bays & side gunnery positions open.

Those are my mega-detail projects for the future.

Mike,

Cutaway panels are nice and a great way of showcasing interior detail. I’ve never done one, but have always wanted to… one day. [:)]

Take care,

Thanks for the tip traskos, but as yet I’ve not come across anything useful. I don’t know about you, but I find navigating that site a bit confusing. At least I found the forum & asked my silly questions there. Who knows? [;)]

The internal detail question, eh?
To detail or not to detail…
It’s nice to know that it’s all in there, but if you physically cannot see it, then it’s a bit of a waste of energy.
Sure - there’s no doubt that the superdetailing will help you gain skills and advance your modelling abilities, and that’s a good thing.
But if you just can’t see all that fabulous work, you have to judge for yourself if it’s worth the effort.

I’ll stick to doing the work that can be seen, even if it’s only JUST out of the corner of a window or bay door. For example - when I finally get the AC-130 gunship I’m after in 1/48th, the outside of the sensor operations room will be detailed. The interior most definitely won’t, unless it can be seen thru the open door (close the door mike!)

Mike,

Here’s a picture of the Aurora Chinook re-build I done a few years ago just before it was ready to close… I said to myself; “just detail the area’s that can be seen”… well, with the open ramp, windows, crew doors, and windshield, that turned out to be MOST of it! [:o]

But you notice I didn’t detail the forward transmission… (which was small consolation considering that made up only about 6% of the total interior work) [:-^]

Take care,
Frank

Wow Frank - that’s one heavy bit of detailing! When i get that good, I know I’ve made it [;)]

Have you got any pics of the finished item?
