Styrene is derived from petroleum and natural gas by-products. The model styrene is actually polystyrene, but just referred to as styrene so as not to be confused with the expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) type you see in packaging. After market strip and sheet is often made from acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene (ABS).
Trivia part 2: other styrenes include styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), and unsaturated polyester resin (UPR), which is better known as fiberglass. [:D]
