As you know i told of building the Airfix version of the “Severn” the biggest RNLI lifeboat at the time. This kit is amazing in some ways, disappointing in others. the Amazing? The incredible level of detail inside the cabin of the vessel. Even the molding of the seat bases contains the rails they woiuld move on the be adjusted!
Problem? To a builder like myself, Yes! There is so much detail that deserves seeing, yet the only way you are goimg to see it is through the windows. Which, by the way, as is typical sadly, for Airfix, So damaged by sink marks as to be useless for the viewing. I had to replace each and every one with window panes made from A C/D/ crystal container top!. The real disappointing thing was the instructions though.
At the best were the drawings of the model for sure. But there were areas where there were no paint callouts, and when there were it was sometimes hard to pinpoint which part they were referring to. Based on the photos on the instructions I deduced that the outside of the cabin also had an Orange roof. It tells you what color for the inside, but not the outside.
the lettering in these call-outs was so fine that in some cases A magnifier had to be used.Maybe I got a badly printed copy, but I think not. Some details, such as fire extinguishers and other gear had No color callouts at all! All in All an interesting model to build. It is a shame that Airfix couldn’t have figured a removeable or alternate parts to provide just that, Like an optional clear top. Or a side with a "Window " to allow viewing.
Well you know I built a full hill conversion of CV41 Midway several years ago, the old Revell kit.
The comic pages were a single 18x24 sheet map folded. One side had an isometric exploded view of the separate parts.
The other side had photos of the kits in the Picture Fleet.
My usual altitude is that if you can’t tell the answer no one else would know it either.

You are so right. Now I am into another vessel as a break before final finish of the “Severn”. What did I pick? Leave it to me. I got the “SOYA, Third Corps” From Hasegawa! Guess what,? I am more confused with that because the only color call outs were Aqeous or Mr Color. Luckily I do have a Mr.Color Chart for their colors.
The really funny part? The whole instruction booklet and the one for the included P.E. are all in JAPANESE! I knew I should’ve taken that Babbel course.LOL,LOL! She’s an interesting model anyway.Her construction goes beyond odd.
I have never had a hull go together this way and it’s fascinating. Now here’s a closing funny, What do you think in1/350 is the smallest piece on the P.E. Fret? is it a ship part, per se? Not really, it’s the SHIP"S CAT!!!
It sounds like you put a lot of effort into building the Airfix version of the “Severn” lifeboat despite the challenges with the kit. It’s disappointing when the instructions and parts don’t meet expectations, especially when you’re looking forward to showcasing the detailed interior. Your solution of creating window panes from a CD container top shows creativity and dedication to the project.
Improvements like removable or alternate parts to allow for better visibility of the interior details would indeed enhance the overall experience of building the model. Hopefully, your feedback and experience will be taken into consideration by Airfix and other model kit manufacturers to improve future releases.
