Info on the Black Cats....

Just saw a show on Discovery Wings last night on these PBY squadrons and have decided that when I get around to it, I’ll be building up the Monogram kit into one of these…anyone know of any clear pics depicting nose art and the like? I know they were all flat black in color, but specific planes would be nice…and color profiles are fine by me. Thanks in advance…

Mike,

I’ve got an old magazine with some good pictures. I’ll see if I can dig it out soon. One thing I clearly remember is that the all black PBYs would become pretty heavily weathered, and this magazine article had a great picture of that.

I’ve just moved, so it may take me a little while to find the article.

Regards,

Mike

See if you can find a copy of Squadrons PBY in Action - there are several good pics of US and Australian Black Cats

Thanks guys…

Drew-- that would be great to see…thanks. References to good weathering is always nice!

Quincy-- I’ve found a website that has some pics from the book…when my book fund gets back up there in amounts, I’ll have to pick it up.

Jeeves were you doing the Midway theme? I saw decals on Yellowhammers page for the plane the spotted the Japanese Fleet in June of 42.

Originally I was going to do the blue/white scheme around the time of Midway, but not having done a night black scheme before, I do believe I’ll go with the Black Cats instead…Aeromaster seems to have a set available-- and Great Models actually has it in stock [;)]

PBY’s weren’t the only seaplanes to be given the all black paint job. There were also a few PBM Mariner squardons given these same paint schemes and missions. I get to hear the stories whenever I talk to my grandfather who was a nose gunner on the Mariner.[:D]
