…this is the best video footage I have ever seen that comes close to conveying the power of modern artillery…wait until the second half of the clip: you can hear the boom of the cannon, the whistling of the round coming in, and then the EXPLOSION…
Good counterbattery fire. Looks like the tracking of the rockets to their source was very accurate.
No secondaries. Most likely they were hitting empty ground. Curious what the time delay was between the initial rocket firings and the counterfire, there was a fade out in the video so it is difficult to tell.
Sound is very clear. I have been on the wrong end of friendly arty once-no fun, but thats what it sounds like.
I hope they got some of the bad guys, but there is no way to tell. No casualties seen or heard. I’d love to know the BDA.
welcome to the wonderfull world of a 155mm howitzer. Come rain or shine, day or night, he’ll always come knocking on your door. Did anybody here catch the distance they were shooting? Well under two miles, and say closer to two klicks.
I once had the Sargent Major tell the hill I was spending the night had never had a round land on ever (not even a sniper round). Later that night Charlie Battery 1st of the 14th walked six rounds of 105 HE right thru the middle of the place. Lots of CBL’d shorts that night, but nobody was seriously tagged. I soon learned that if somebody told you the place about as secure as it could get; you’d better start digging a deep hole in the ground.
The have a setup to plot the trajectory of a 122mm rocket, and a good crew will have him in three or four rounds. Takes two crews that use each radar unit to cross reference with the other. Accurate within fifty feet.
Didnt look like any A-10’s were available/nearby. As much as I love that bird, they gotta be around to help out.
Okay, Heavy Arty, in the US Army, Artillery is known as the “king of battle”. Infantry is known as the “queen of battle”. Why? (any former/current grunts should know this one)[:-^]
My grandfather used to tell me about the artillery and shore bombardments during WW2 as he described the sound as an express train going overhead. Watching that video, certainly confirms what he was alluding to!
How about 1 M26A1 MLRS Rocket? A mix of 644 soda-can sized shaped charge projectiles and anti-personnel bomblets per rocket. One will take out a square football field, or 12 (one launcher’s worth) will take out 1 square grid square. That is the King of Battle. We don’t have to wait for them to hit the IP and have enough station time and fuel left to still be useful either.
As to why the infantry is called the “Queen of Battle”, it is in reference to the queen chess piece. The queen is the most mobile piece on the board and can move in any direction to attack. We all know what the king does to the queen though…[XX][:D]
Ok…For those who like the last video here is what artillery can do from my “pop guns” to Gino’s MLRS. A tank may be great with one round but I will take steel rain anyday.
Ahhhh…Ahhhhhhh…Ahhhhhh…Ok you got nice little fire works with that MLRS…but I’ll trump ya with One B-2 loaded with 80 (yea that’s right 80) GBU-38’s hitting 80 (yep that’s right 80) seperate targets with 292 lbs of N.E.W. (thats each, 23360 pounds total [:-,]) with GPS accuracy…GAME-SET-MATCH!
If you guys didn’t know I’m a Chopper guy, but it was a 53’s honor to carry 198’s whereever they needed to go. It’s an even greater honor to have a cabin full of 155 shells.
My old man’s an old school artillery guy. (He’s got some good stories, one involves the Commandant and a muzzle plug.) Why does artillery have its own Patron Saint? The Old man told me about it once, but I need a refresher.
About hogs and 30mm’s, they’re pretty cool, but even 30mm’s and 2 wingsfull of ordinance can’t deliver quite as much as a field piece.
Even the multi-billion dollar B-2 can’t hang out for very long. Even the B-2 has to land to replenish its load. Drive a truck up to an artillery piece and it’s like the Energizer Bunny.
Plus, there’s always the taxpayer factor. How much more does a GBU-38 cost compared to an MLRS rocket or a 155 shell? How much JP-5 carries the B-2 from Missouri to the Middle East? Even flight suits cost more than Camoglauge.
With all due respect to B-2’s and A-10’s, and airplane can’t replace ground assets. I think that point has been made time and time again.
OK, I’ve had just about enough of this Army one-upmanship. How do 192 individually GPS targeted (accurate within 90 meters) 475 kiloton W88 MIRV warheads sound? With a range of 7000 miles and virtual indetectability of the launch platform until actual launch? Just one Trident equipped Ohio class submarine.
