Here’s an early in-progress shot of my latest project, Tamiya’s mid-production Tiger I. I’m adding CMK’s cast-resin Zimmerit parts and one of Eduard’s turned-aluminum barrels.
Not surprisingly, the kit’s a real sweetheart (even with all those individual-link tracks).
The CMK parts are nice, but are a little on the small size; I suspect there was a bit of a shrinkage problem with the resin. Thankfully I’ve been able to blend them in with epoxy putty.
The finished model will be featured in a two-part weathering series in FSM.
Looking very crisp and clean so far. I still have to keep wondering why manufacturors don’t add their own zimmerite on the hulls… Ah well… I’m intruiged to the rest of the build! Keep us informed!
Matthew, looks link a pretty nice build you’ve got going there. We’ll all be looking forward to seeing the article when it’s published. I’m going to be doing a very similar build with a 1/72 Revell Tiger and Atak zimmerit.

Ha! It’s funny; I meant to go out and buy a new background over the weekend. I guess I’ve used the blue one too often!
I was quite surprise to see that the kit had a smooth (no Zimmerit) hull when I opened the box. All of the mid-production Tigers should have it. Although Tamiya’s instructions recommend using their putty, I used Aves’ Apoxie Putty instead. It’s my first experience with it, and it worked wonderfully. It has a working time of about three hours, so I didn’t have to rush. The CMK panels for the sides of the hull were too short lengthwise, and I used the putty to patch things up. It’s the gray stuff on the corner:
Maybe you could run a “sub” article with pictures of some of the models the forum members did for the Tiger I Mid Pro group build a few months back. There were some real nice models that came out of that build.
Great job on the zim! Lookin good! Yeah, zim in 1/72 would be hard, but possible. The tamiya zim tools come with two sizes of spacing in the blades, so I think that the .5mm size would probably work. Just a thought. But thanks for showing us the tiger!
I almost have the hull completed, and I’m steeling myself for the individual-link tracks (!). I’ll post some more photos when I’ve made some more progress.
