Darwin,
Congradulations. That is an excellant article and wonderful build. I love the 105, so I ask, the changes you made to the kit apply to all D’s or just the early ones ie: the wing stiffeners.

Congrats Darwin, A well deserved honor.

So that is you! Congrats Darwin!! Great article on the '105- I wouldn’t mind finding one and giving it a shot. Really fine job on the build and again, CONGRATS!!!
Regards,
Jon

Brain44, RedMax8, JoeRugby, Thundervette, ghettochild, TryintoModel, Bgrigg, ModelNerd, leemitcheltree, RemcoGrob, gburdon, Gumiflex, wibhi2, dragonfly and armorman; thanks for the compliments. I put a lot of work into that model and it does produce a lot of self satisfaction to see the article in the magazine.

wibhi2: The D model 105s came off of the Republic assembly line without the wing & fuselage stiffeners or the large air intakes for the afterburner section. These were added after experience in Viet Nam showed the need for them. Most of the silver birds in that theater went to Tainan, Taiwan, for the modifications and they received the camouflage paint job at the same time. The birds still in the States received the paint and mods before going to Viet Nam/Thailand. The Thud was originally designed/built with a dual hydraulic system, but the lines for both systems ran right beside each other along the belly of the plane. The designers apparently thought that the only problem would be mechanical failure of one system and that would not affect the second. They didn’t consider the possibility of combat damage, usually coming from below the plane, taking out both systems with one hit. With the original configuration, losing both main hydraulic systems caused the elevator to go to full DOWN. This is not a very good thing at low altitude/high speed. The mod program included adding a backup hydraulic system with the lines running through the small turtle deck area between the canopy and the fin. The original planes did not have this feature.

Congrats! I look forward to reading it.

Congratulations Darwin. I read the article, but didn’t realize it was yours. Well done [tup].
