IL-2 Build, all done but Weathering

Please let me know what you think, I build armor mostly but love this plane, Camo was sprayed on with an airbrush freehand fo the first time[;)]

It looks good to me,I’m guessing it to be 1/48 scale by judging by size of paint bottles.I have a 1/72 scale version I plan to build, my question is those white lines in front of canopy .Are they decals? What are they for? My kit didn’t come with any decals like that and if I want to add them ,have you or anybody else have any suggestions how to do them .Remember my model is 1/72 scale. This is my first time I’ve appeared in this forum ,I hope I’m doing this right! oatswilly

miller41,
Great job! Can’t wait to see it after it’s weathered.

Oatswilly,
Your doing it right, and let me be the first to give you a hearty welcome aboard! You’re gonna love it here. Lot’s of info and tips to be had, and the comaraderie (sp) is outstanding!

Looking good. If you are going to convert from armor to aircraft this seems a logical choice as it was basically a flying tank anyway. Looking forward to seeing it weathered.

Looking good, Miller!

Very Nice Looking build! What kit is it?

Nice job so far, Miller41

Great job on your aircraft !! You obviously have some talent. I assume this is the Accurate Miniatures 1/48 scale kit. As an Armor builder, use a little more restraint when you decide to weather it as aircraft didn’t get as beat up as tanks. For oatswilly question, I assume the white lines on the cowl are kit decals. On the real Aircraft they were an assist to the pilot in aiming his/her ( Russians had female combat pilots in WWII ) attack.

Rick

Very nice…I agree with Rick to an extent- but out of all the aircraft at that time, the Soviet planes were the most crudely built…especially the IL-2’s. They were built to take a lot of punishment and were made for dealing out plenty as well-- but I have read accounts where many of the sections that fit together were not always smooth…the welds were rough…and pieces of armor tacked on in the field. The best resources out there for modeling Soviet aircraft of WWII (at least for getting historical backgrounds and operational histories) are the Black Cross Red Star series of books.

They are expensive but well worth it-- I can’t wait til next year to see Vol. 3 released…

Accurate miniatures Kit, and it went together well except for one or two litle things. The white lines are decals that came with it, apparentely that what the plane looked like according to the pictures in the kit. I only plan on very light weathering, as your right these planes had a much better chance of being shot down than getting all dirty and beat up:-)

looks good miller41
welcome aboard oatswilly

She’s a beaut! It looks like she just rolled off the assembly line, and is all ready to get dirty. Great job on the cammo. I’m getting ready to paint my first cammo and I’m a bit nervous about it. Mine’s a 1/72 spit. How well did yours go, any real or unforseen problems with it?

Looks great as is miller41. Like to see it weathered when its done.

was considering picking the kit up last weekend.
you did a nice job and made up my mind for me.

Huh? They didn’t call it the flying tank for nothing [;)] Trust me guys-- there aren’t too many fighter/bombers from WWII that can claim the notoriety of having German cannon shells bounce off of their skin harmlessly… the one area to hit these things to be sure of a kill was underneath into their radiators, which was why the pilots learned to hug the ground early on so the German 109s couldn’t get those gut shots.

I’m not saying go crazy on weathering, but these planes were the farthest thing from fragile there was during the war.

Looks GREAT! Now if i can just find time to do build my 1/48 accurate minatures IL-2[V]

Did somebody say “weathering?”
Did somebody sat “restraint?”
Naaaah.

I have 4 other Accurate miniatures kits to do yet:-) They are fantastic IMHO

While this site is mainly based on a computer flight sim, they do know their stuff about the Soviet IL-2…
