IJN Green & Grey

Confused. Making my J2M3 Raiden, and it calls (obviously) for these colours. Humbrol’s equivalent of IJN green is discontinued [:(!] so I start researching for a good match. White Ensign Paints do IJN green/grey AND Mitsubishi navy green/grey, which are lighter!!! Whats the deal? How do you know which to use? Does it depend on the time in the war? Were they both used on Zeros, and which should go on my Jack?

Stoopid, stoopid Humbrol…

IJN green is a dark, slightly bluish tint, semigloss green. ModelMaster has it in both enamel & acrylic. The grey/green colors you describe sounds more like the underside colors.

Cheers for the reply, but I don’t think I was clear enough. The range of paint has:

IJNAF Black green
IJN Grey
Mitsubishi Navy Green
Mistubishi Navy Grey

I know what all these colours are, and have no problem getting them, but I don’t understand which were used on what. I understand that the greys are the under colours - I was just being lazy in the first post when I said green/grey instead of green AND grey.

So should my Jack be IJN Black-green, or the much lighter Mitsubishi navy green?[?]

If it is like the Tamiya I built years ago, That black/green is the anti glare on top of the fuselage, in front of the windscreen. It is usually blue/black. And the rest of the upper surfaces should be navy green.

Have a look at www.j-aircraft.com in the research section. They have a colour chart with hobby paint equivilants. Here is the direct link:

This site has all the info you ever need on Japanese aircraft in WW2.

G’day,

The ‘Jack’ you intend to do is IJA Green and IJA grey, it was an army aircraft not a navy one, model master do the colours for this bird the green is # 2114 and the grey is # 2115.
The IJN colours were more bluish hew’s than the IJA, if you need to cover the subject in navy colours the numbers are 2116 for the Green and 2117 for the Grey

I hope this helps.

Rob.

The Mitsubishi J2M is a Navy bird (Army designations are “Ki”).
Late '44 into '45, the IJN went to a darker (black-green) for use on land-based AC (not many carriers left at this point). If your particular Raiden is carrier-based, the Mitsubishi Green would be more appropriate.

Here are some B&W WW II photos.

And a restored AC.

OK so I made a mistake, I don’t have ‘Jack’ in the collection.

Here is a pic of a Rufe done in ModelMaster IJN green. It should be the color you want for a Raiden.

[:o)]Oh, well…

Some of us just don’t know “Jack”![sigh]

…Sorry…I just couldn’t resist.[][:I]
