IJN Chitose seaplane tender

Does anyone know if the IJN Chitose (Aoshima) in the latest issue of FSM as a “new” kit actually a new kit or just a repackaging of an older one. And it’s not quit clear if it is a Aoshima kit or a Dragon kit. If it is a new kit where can I get it? Dragon USA doesn’t appear to sell to individuals…

Aoshima Chitose is a new tooled kit. In the same line are Chiyoda and more recently Nisshin. However it has came out for about 4-6 months now. In recent times Japanese manufacturers has limited production runs, and unless secured via pre-order, stock tend to run out very quickly. If FSM has just reviewed it, then it’s likely too late to get it at normal prices.

FYI there are 2 versions of Chitose, the initial production ‘limited’ version with a fret of PE, and the later production without the PE but priced lower. In terms of RRP conversion to USD, about $26 for the initial production and $20 for the subsequent normal version, so yes, they are fairly affordable new tooled kits.

As a matter of habit, always buy models from the source. Things manufactured in Japan, buy from Japanese shops - be it HLJ, Amiami, or 1999.co.jp/eng. Buying from a distributor locally is asking for paying a min 30% margin on top of the RRP. Typically Japanese online retailers apply a 5-20% discount on the RRP and after you factor into international shipping, works out about par (if buying a couple at a time).

Aoshima also retooled the Seaplane Carrier Mizuho as well and most of the parts of the Mizuho kit are shared by the chitose and they have some nice aircraft that come with the kit too. But you should check out the new tooled carriers that Fujimi put out as well. Fujimi has a whole line of new tooled Pearl Harbor raider carrier kits I have Shokaku right now but they also have Hiryu Soryu and Akagi.
