IDF M51 Sherman progress.

Hi all,

just thought I’d post some progress pics of my current kit. Its the Academy M51 Sherman. Great kit except for the gun mantle cover (doesn’t line up). I’ve still got some pastels to apply and to finish off and fix the tools on (just placed on the tank for the photos for the moment).

Would be greatful for any comments or tips.

Jurgen

Nice red X’s!

Sorry, can’t see the pix.

Oh, and welcome to FSM!

My only comment is get some bigger pics posted so we can see the detail on this great build![B)]

Steve

Looks great, bigger pics would be good, but the detail looks great!

Welcome to FSM!

I can see the pix now (only got the red X’s earlier), and although small, what I can see looks pretty good.
Looking forward to seeing what it really looks like in larger pix!

Nice colour and nice weathering! I love the M51

looks great so far, but need bigger pics as others have said[:D]–treadwell

Hi all,

I’ve managed to upload some larger picutres. Hope they look ok.

Hi Jurgen, as an ex-IDF tanker, it looks good! We didn’t have the Sherman in my time, so I can’t really comment too much, but I do like to see personal bags and sleeping bags festroon on the tank. That’s how it is in reality.

It might be right, but I would think a double check of your sources is needed with regard to the three kill bands. They look way too thin to me. Certainly in my day they were much thicker, and looking at pictures of Shermans, they seemed to be the same back then. However, it’s your choice how you wish to depict the tank.

Hi Osher,

thanks for the feedback. I’m not sure about the kill bands as they are the decals supplied with the kit. They may look thinner due to the angle of the barel in the photo. I was originally planing to paint them on, but being only my 3rd kit, I decided to try applying decals over ‘Future’ to see how it appears. I have to admit, ‘Future’ is a great product!!!

I too orginally thought they were a little thin, but thought that the kit decals would have been correct to scale.

thanks again,
Jurgen

very nice

Hi all,
here’s the base I’m making for this Sherman. Again, any comments or advice would be appreciated.

Jurgen…

interesting posing of the tank! I would definately try to make this tank more “lived in” by putting some blankets and such in that stowage bin! They were ALWAYS packed to the nines! This would add the final touches to the beautiful build

With the bigger pics it looks much better! Is it the Academy kit?? I build the Academy one and I believe that they supply stowage, overall not a bad kit from Academy…

Interesting pose! Looks good though. I guessed the kill bands were decals, so, maybe, that particular Sherman had non-standard kill bands? Either that, or Academy made a slip on decals.

Hi Osher,

being an ex-IDF tanker, I was wondering if you could clarify something for me. As per the Kit instructions and box are, I’ve painted the fittings red. I’ve previously read (not sure where now) that during peace time and on training exercises, these fittings could be painted either red or black
Is this correct?

thanks in advance,

Jurgen.

hi man-- the new, bigger pics really do a nice job of showcasing your build![:D]-- looks real good !! and, that is quite the ‘rockclimber’ you got there[8D]- nice job—treadwell–

Your sherman looks outstanding, and real. Good job [:)]

Very nice kit.

You were looking for comments, and I had to struggle to find some. When you add pastels, but sure to put a good dose on the running gear and the spare tracks on the turret.

The paint is beautiful and looks worn and sunbleached.

Nice job overall, and I love the way its being mounted on its base.

Very nice build. The weathering and finishing is great. I would most definitely add some stowage to that bin. Its a very nice kit, one of the nicer Academy offerings. I can’t remember having any problems with mine.
