Hi guys,

As you know the Weather channel has some great programs on that deal with aviation. My favorite is Icepilots. A saga on the trials and tribulations of flying the worldest oldest transport aircraft under sever weather conditions. There are models on the market of all Buffalo’s aircraft. DC-3,4,8 then the Lockheed L-188. wich is a decendent of the P-3 Orion Naval Sub hunter. I’m goin to try my hand at the L-188 in wood as It is a workhorse. The fonts and with alittle art work I should be able to make a scratch built rendition of Buffalos aircraft…http://i1028.photobucket.com/albums/y342/ArtworksIII/ec84870f0ee6.jpg There are decals for plastic model on Ebay but not to the scale of my model 37 inches long…

Try www.canmilair.com He’s willing to make anything anysize, it looks like, if he has the ink. He does have a Buffalo set, but I’m not sure if it’s the Electra or DC-3.

You mean the weather channel isn’t just overreacting to every dark cloud, bolt or lightning, and wind gust like they used to do? Interesting…[whstl] sorry I can’t offer any help…

I’ve seen Ice Pilots and did enjoy it BTW.

I enjoy the Ice Pilots series and have a C-46 and C-47 in 1/72nd scale waiting foir decals. IIR the L188 “Electra” was designed as a turbo-prop airliner and the P-3 Orion version was developed much later.

We have them flying around here from Whidby Island near Seattle. I know it’s a heavy loud and they smoke like heck when they start the engines…

I’ve been a pilot for almost 30 years. I can’t watch reality TV shows like Flying Wild Alaska anymore they are just to stupid. Last one I saw the stair door on a Cessa Caravan came open in flight. They made a whole show out of this “dangerous situation” when in reality you just land and close the door.

Didn’t catch that episode “yet” I like the vintage aircraft they continue to make fly and for all intensive purposes he’s really a collector. The Cl 215 and 415 are great fire fighters too…

rangerj your memory is correct. The Electra first flew December 6 1957 and the first delivery was October 1958… One of the airframes was taken off the line, shortened by 7 feet and flew as an Orion aerodynamic prototype on August 19 1958. The true Electra prototype, which was substantively different to the Electra, first flew in August 1959 and the first aircraft for delivery to the Navy flew on April 15 1961, delivery being made to Patuxent River in August 1962

I remember the problems and accidents in the early days of the Electra. Living in the UK the only ones we got to see were the KLM machines after the problems had been sorted . 40 years and more on the type became a regular in UK skies as a very solid freight hauler.

I always thought their was a look of a “grown up” Viscount about the Electra, a much better looking aircraft than the real “grown up” Viscount, the Vanguard.
