everyone is talkin about SNOW! as if they can put a blanket full of snow on a base and its finnished… lets talk ice!!
i have found a way to make easy icicyles! put them anywhere, under tanks (around engine where it heats, melts snow and freezes.) on roofs, on trees (thats what im doing in a dio right now) ANYWHERE!
i used hot glue (in the gun) touch the tip to the area, squeeze the trigger alittle so enough goes on and pull the gun slowly away…then with a paint brush dipped in water touch the glue so itll harden. keep on taking it back until u have the right length and cut the string (a long strand of glue that always follows u around!!!) put a white wash on it and it look like a real icicycle!
NOW ON TO MAKING ICE, WATER SPECIFICALLY. i dont know how to make it but if anyone knows please post! HOPE YOU HAVE SUCCESS WITH THE ICICYCLES!! [:D][:D]
I normally get them from the Model Railroad shop.
Cut of the sprue and attach with a drop of white glue, viola. Come in an nice range of sizes too.

Good technique for making icicles. For ice, use parafin wax. Pour it onto the area you want iced over. For wet, melting ice, coat with gloss lacquer. You can also make broken ice by using the parafin, break it up once set, float broken pieces on epoxy, gel medium, or whatever you use for water. I have seen an awesome dio of this, with a Tiger falling through the ice, of course, I can’t find it now.
for icicles try taking a piece of clear sprue heating it above a candle and while stretching (like you can make antennas) turn your sprue at one end so you get it twisted and when cold just cut it attache it where you want and give it a coat of gloss gel medium [;)]

For making a frozen pond or body of water. I recently received the Masterclass Modeling TERRAIN book and tried the example for making a frozen pond desribed in it.
- Choose the size of the body of water you want to make
- Cut shape of area out of plexiglass
- Drip slightly on the underside in random patterns white candle wax to simulate the air pockets caught under the ice.
- Place the “water” with the wax side down and secure to the diorama
- Lightly spray the surface of the water with a mist of dullcote or simliar
Looks like the real thing.

the thing with my technique its much faster than with sprue, just dab, wet, cut. but for bigger icicycles i think the sprue thing would be best! to try my idea u should have quick hands to make them best. you need to wet it to dry it or else once you get far enough the base will start moving back up and youll have a small icicycle!

Great idea for both the icicyles, and icey ponds. Will have to give them a try soon.
Alternatively fishing thread and acrylic gel/white glue to thicken it come to mind.
Leave a bit of the thread exposed so that it can be clued into a hole on the model or thicken it while on the model.
