…if I hadn’t read it myself. I have never heard of this before, I read “Skunk Works” by Ben Rich several times (I own the book), and this is totally new.

Has anyone else heard of this? Operating a U-2 from aircraft carriers?? This seems pretty legit, the photos really do not look doctored.
Boy, you learn somethin’ new every day!
Yes, I heard of that before and seen several photos of it as well. However, I don’t remember the specifics of why they did it.
That’s hard to believe considering how they have to land that thing on land, a car chasing after it to tell the pilot exactly how high he it, I didn’t think it was durable enough for that sorta thing, pretty crazy.
I’ve seen the photos of the U-2 and KC-130 landing and taking off from carriers in a couple of my references. Sometimes things just have to be tried for the sake of seeing “if it works”. If so, then you have another option at tackling a problem. [:D]
It’s even harder to believe that a C130 landed and took off from a carrier, both unassisted. Check the link at the bottom of the of the U2 page.
I’m flabbergasted that that’s possible!
“Lift” (wing area), “Thrust”, and “Head Wind” are glorious combinations indeed! Jimmy Doolittle really appreciated those three factors! [:)]
Thanks, great post!
Take care,
Frank
Had seen the pics before, but it’s still pretty amazing.
Regards, Rick
Sounds interesting… I don’t know enough about that subject so I’ll just smile[:)]
yeah I’ve see film of a U-2 landing on the carrier Forrestal or Midway and taking off, I beleave it was for the Pentagon to purchase the plane because of the adaptability it was capable of, also did you know they also landed a C-130 on a carrier too it was basically for the same reasons
