Last night I worked very hard to finally get my hellcat all painted and thought it looked beautiful (anything looks beautiful after a very long masking progress and a 10pm finish)
This morning, though, I woke up and went to admire my work and wondered if the preshading shows through too much?!? So I am looking for your help and opinions on the matter before I go and give it another round in the paint shop.

It does show through quite a bit…I’m not sure, but perhaps you could give the primary camp pattern a second coat to tone it down? It isn’t too drastic, but I think it is a bit more pronounced than usual. What paint scheme are you looking at for reference? I’ve never seen a Hellcat in anything other than the F6F-3 three-tone and the F6F-5 deep blue (I guess the bright orange target drones as well)…is this a British one?
The preshading was done very nicely…the ribs on the rear fuselage look extremely accurate, and I think if you toned them down a bit it would look incredible. Good work!
How did you do the preshading? is that airblasted on or brushed?
Thanks. It is british…royal navy. Hasegawa makes the MKII (F6F-5 in 1/48) (What I am doing) and the MKI (F6F-3 in 1/72). As for reference pictures…I have yet to find any. Believe me I have looked again and again, but haven’t found anything except a few profiles that don’t show the scheme very well. So I am going from the kit directions, but I admit I don’t even know what kind of base it would sit on or anything [:(]
The preshading was done with an airbrush (black paint over a coat of grey primer.)

I know silver pencil is good to show chipping on the darker upper surfaces but I have a modeling book that has lower surface chips for many wwii planes in a blueish/gray. Is silver not good for lighter lower surfaces???

The chipping on planes can be silver or primer color is the chipping just started over a primer panel. Always best to trust your sources.
newtothegame you have been given some good advice, let me just say you are doing great on this. the preshading looks good, is it your first time at preshading? look forward to seeing it completed.

The pre-shading is a little stark IMHO, especially on the fuselage.
For oil leaks, a thin application of Burnt Sienna ( A Reddish Brown ) works well.
I recently took my first shot at preshading with a straight up black and got similar results. I think next time I’ll use a more subtle shade such as grimy black or a dark grey. It worked for me when I had the same situation with sludge washes.
Thanks everyone for the comments / help. Tomorrow I am going to remask the white stripes and try to lightly freehand the upper camoflage a little more to tone down the preshading.
The end is in site and I may actually finish this by the end of the week (I started in February - jeez I am slow… [sigh]
You’re beating me. I started my kit in January and I haven’t even finished constructing it, letalone doing final painting and decaling.Granted, I took a few months’ break. [:)]
