I am working on a 1/72 Revell Su-27 and I need to paint the missles white. Well I am trying to brush paint them and the paint is not covering well at all. I have three coats on and you can still see the primer underneath. Can someone give some tips on how to do this well? I always see beautifully painted white missles and I cannot do it myself. It is very frustrating.

What kind of paint are you using?
Most white paint is heavy with zinc and or titanium (not sure about acrylics?) and this makes it semi-transparent and pretty hard to brush. It can be a pain to spray, too.
I usually mist white on with an airbrush in lotsa light (very light) coats. With a brush I undercoat with a VERY light grey - not the usual mid-grey primer.
Gloss white is the worst offenfer. I don’t use it. Satin varnish afterwards. Gloss varnish if you really have to [:(]
Never tried it, but I have a hunch that Tamiya flat base in acrylic whites would help.

Geez. White certainly can be a pain in the rump. If the plastic is already white I just paint on flat white. But it it’s grey (plastic or primer) I use krylon flat white or white auto primer.
I guess I should have mentioned this but I am using Testor’s flat white enamel paint. I never thought of trying krylon paint maybe I will give that a whirl. I have a can leftover from where I rattle can painted my Revell '79 Camaro.

Use acyrlics, but don’t use modelmaster semi or gloss white!!![:O] It’s very tricky to apply. I’d use tam flat white acryl-it just goes on easier. Make sure you apply it in thin coats if you airbrush it and glob it on if you handpaint it. Hope it helps.
The model masters gloss white enamel is the worst paint encounter i ever had. I ended up changing my whole color scheme because of that stuff at one time.
Stram you should try your krylon and your still not happy. definietly get some tamiya flat white you can gloss afterwards. Tamiya are great paints, they grind their paint pigments super fine so be sure you stir them well before use but they extra fine pigment make all the difference when its all set and dry.

What I do is heat a wire and stick it in the exhast then dip the missle in paint and hang it to dry. I’ve had good luck that way.
Brush painting about any light color (whites, yellows light blues etc) can sometimes be traumatic. Lately, I have started thinning my enamels with laquer thinner - paint seems to flow together better behind the brush (reducing brush strokes) and takes fewer coats to cover. You might experiment and see if it works for you.
