I need an opinion please!

Hi there everybody,

I am thinking about building my first helicopter kit, and I was looking around and found this:

Academy 1/35 UH-1C Huey Gunship Spec Nose Art. Is this a good kit? With good fit and detail and the like. Also would this kit not be too hard for a semi first timer?

Thanks, Jim

Yes, the Academy/MRC UH-1C kits are pretty straight forward with no real issues. They are full of details and can come out really nice. I have built a couple of them, as have many others here. Don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it and keep us posted on the build.

Here is a review of the same kit with different decals.

Jim,

Welcome to the Dark Side! You can’t go wrong building a Huey as your first helo. If you are married to 1/35, then the MRC/Academy UH-1C is your best bet. However, my personal pic for a first helo would be the Italeri UH-1B in 1/72. It’s a straight forward build and with a few minor exceptions is a very accurate kit. The Hobby Boss UH-1B isn’t as good, but from what I’ve done so far, it appears to practically fall together. Best of luck whatever you choose and post pics of your build.

I have started on two of the MRC 1/35 UH-1C kits but have’t completed either one. Main fit issues I had were trimming the aft crew bulkhead on the top right, if my memory is correct and getting the armament hard points together and squared up. Some trimming of parts there too. Best detailed kit of a Huey of any type! Definitely recommend it. If you start one there are lots of other little details to improve it that are in previous Posts.

Thank all of you very much, sorry it took me a while to thank you, I lost the thread…[sn0ps]

Thanks, Jim

I have not done this particular kit, but all the Hueys I’ve come across have a touch of PITA with the interior/fuse sides and top piece. Not especially difficult. If you want a farely simple chopper, for your first, Academys 1/35 AH-1W line is great, much like putting a plane together. It’s been a long time (10/12 years or so) since I’ve done one, can’t remember any probs at all. Got 2 in the stash waiting their turn. There is a few I’ve seen here that could be good ref. for you.

Welcome and Merry Christmas Jim.

I have a WIP thread somewhere in this forum on building the MRC Nose Art Special Huey. It is a nice helicopter but does have its fair share of fit issues, mainly with the interior fitting properly to the outside frame. It also has incorrect pitch-link assembly instructions in the instructions. I would recommend reading my WIP Thread to see all the issues I had. In the end it was a very enjoyable build and I liked the overall kit. I have another one and will build it someday.

Hope this helps you out!
