Just started airbrushing, and so far, it’s pretty cool. Working on a V-22 Osprey that I am gonna cammo. Fuselage is medium grey, and I’m gonna use MC green for the cammo…any tips on cammo jobs? Do I put the fuselage together with all the porthole windows and try to mask them off, or do I try to cammo the thing before I glue it together?
Congratulations, you’re in a whole new world now with that airbrush buddy!
I usually assemble the entire aircraft, less canopy and items like bombs missiles etc. Then mask the wheel wells and cockpit tub with wet tissue. Spray the base coats and camo, seal and let cure. Seperately mask the canopy and windscreen and paint off the aircraft along with the stores. Then final assembly and detailing, weathering. You will probably get many responses as to how to do this, but the above method works for me.
With something like the Osprey, I would assemble the basic fuselage and wings, minus the details like landing gear, etc. Install the canopy/windscreen and mask with either Bare Metal Foil, liquid masking or other of your choice. The kit supplied windows for port holes are usually too thick and mis-shaped anyway, so I put Kristal Klear in the windows, do the painting right over them and then replace after the painting is done.
Great work with that airbrush, Sarge! I’ve just “inherited” a few older airbrushes from a deceased uncle and I’m playing with them to see which I like for which jobs.
